But wait! This isn't a library card they gave me!

Don't all 'modern' library cards have barcodes? Makes it easier for the staff to 'scan' them, and also helps people use the self-service terminals.

Uh....OP, are you in NJ?

Because that looks like an NJ library card (I have one--Avalon here).

And incidentally NJ is different from almost anywhere else in the US. There's an obscure law on the books which states that a public library can demand a budget that's equivalent to a certain percent of the property tax base. As a result, ALL the public libraries in NJ get tons of money that they have to spend. Hence, the computerized cards, etc.
