I made this chart that is mostly just the last ten years of weird/horror short story collections.

If there is interest I can make a more general one. How far back should I go to still count as ‘modern’?

that's good actually, do you have any more?

The Fisherman is great. Was thinking about reading it again just today.

I will get hate for saying this, but:
Metro 2033
I read the book way before the game came out, and the lonely, dystopian, worst-of-humanity kind of atmosphere, coupled with the barely-in-sight horror and the claustrophobia of the setting was absolutely amazing. Contained some of the best horror scenes I've ever read. It was just a good fucking book.

From this Chart S Tier
Teatro Grottesco by Ligotti

The Best of Mark Samuels

Songs for the Unravelling of the World by Brian Evenson

A+ Tier:
Occultations by Laird Barron

Wounds by Nathan Ballingrud

The Best of Caitlin R Kiernan

That said, there are are least some stories in every one of these collections that are very good.

I made a general horror one, but I don’t really like it anymore and I’m trying to do a V2 on it.

Also I really ought to have titled it this. I wanted to capture just how many really good story collections have been published in the last 10-15 years.

Also I’ll put together a ‘21st Century Horror’ with both novels and story collections soon.

Neat, thanks anon

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. fisherman felt completely amateur. Shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Ligotti

How does teatro grotesco compare to his other work? only read part of songs of a dead dreamer so far

Sell me on The Fisherman, looks cool at a glance.

>> No.17901300

It feels like a natural evolution id say. More abstract, but still clearly Ligotti. A lot of deranged people having terrible nightmares.

Nice, it sounds relatable.

It's his best and funniest. Ligotti's first two collections are distinctly him but still with a pulp influence, however his later two collections become more and more philosophically powerful and even the individual stories start assembling into a greater view on existence.
