I'm not gonna lie, I like to masturbate a lot.
99.99% of what I read, is fiction.

Phantom horrors, phantom joys. The theatregoers leave reluctantly as the heavy weight of reality settles back over them.

It's interesting that you quoted this. I have often thought of how reading a book is satisfying my desire for outside life that has been rendered impossible by my introversion. Viewing the characters of others' minds IS self pleasuring and IS definitely created for that purpose only. People who argue that some works of fiction are analyses of human character or anything else are partially correct in the fact that the author may have been critiquing something or other while writing, but as humans we like things to define ourselves like archetypes that we can identify with or commentary of human nature that we can compare our actions to because of the extreme complexity and incomprehensible nature of the real definitions of life. So yes, fiction is merely a distraction

"Masturbatory escapism" = Enjoying yourself. Which is not something that will happen if you read anything by James Joyce.

"All writing is pigshit" ~ Tony Artaud.

well yeah, written language can be utilized for entertainment or for more utilitarian purposes.

Also it isn't functionless. It's function is to make my life bearable. It is a selfish function, but a function none the less.

>> No.1787398

This is just a glib little remark to provoke people who are insecure. I think Joyce was being an asshole when he said this. It's pretty sophomoric too.

I couldn't have put it better myself. It's one of the few things that make me not kill myself. Hats off to you, Anonymous.
