I got so into this book, then was just left pissed off once I'd finished it. It's a perfectly fine little country-house story, but you're right, having looked at interviews with Ishiguro, it's clear the man has nothing of consequence to say, it's just "we is butlers."
I actually thought the film did a better job of capturing the potentially good little story contained within the book. I would also say that the prose itself is very honed.

Also apparently they gave that faggot a knighthood.
