I've never been on /lit/ before.

i have three questions.

are there every any Romance of the Three Kingdoms threads?

what is /lit/'s general opinion on Romance of the Three Kingdoms?

can we have a Romance of the Three Kingdoms thread?

You can't have elitism without lit.

Pic related.

i...just wanted to talk about romance of the three kingdoms. i'm having a great time reading it. i'm already accustomed to most of it through many forms of media but i have never read the novel itself until recently.

i hear there are two versions. i have the version that has the names spelt how they sound. for example liu bei is Liu Pei and cao cao is T'sao T'sao and so forth, although liu bei is mostly referred to as Yuan te. which version is better, or rather, what are the differences?

Not so much elitism as the fact that very few people here actually read. And then when they do read, it's the same couple dozen books that are widely read in high school.

That said, which translation of it did you read? I still haven't picked up a copy yet.

i described it as best i could above. 120 chapters. got it alongside the art of war and miyamoto musashi's book of five rings, i'm really into military history, although saying this would make me seem like i like asian military history that is not true. i like it all.

Art of War was influential everywhere.

have you or anyone else here read the book of five rings? i've seen a lot of quotes from it from total war games and it forced me to buy it.

No, I got hooked up on the I Ching and Tao Te Ching. Haven't touched Chinese lit in a while, but I'll have a look at Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Hopefully someone else has read this though.

i can tell you Romance of the Three Kingdoms is VERY much worth your time, it has over 1000 characters although it is a bit biased in favor of Liu Bei and his kingdom, although it is to be expected that a romanticized tale paints a protagonist and antagonists.

i was wondering about some books that explore the Sengoku Jidai period, although i never came across any interesting titles. i know that the book of five rings is written by Miyamoto who lived towards the end of those times, but i want a book that details the history from 1500-1650 sort of time period. any suggestions?
