So, I've read 1984 and Animal Farm. Where to go next on Orwell's books?
I was considering reading his Catalonia stuff. Is it any good?
Also, is it true that his early texts where very left leaning and he abandoned that ideology later?

He gets shot at by communists in Catalonia if that's anything to go by

Homage to Catalonia is good but not historically accurate

Could you elaborate?

My personal favourite is "A Clergyman's Daughter" but i don't think he ever really wrote a bad book.

>> No.17830558

I enjoyed The Road to Wigan Pier
1st half is his description of poor living conditions for the working class in Wigan.
2nd half is about the absolute state of the Socialist party in England and how it’s overrun with vegetarians proto-trannies and insufferable faggotry.

sounds like nothing has changed with state of socialist movements

What? Could he see into the future?

I enjoyed Homage to Catalonia.

>>17830493
Don't know about that, big lad, he's simply recounting his experiences. Don't see how you could claim that as being historically inaccurate.

>>17830470
i thought he was fighting with the communists
Then he wrote a book about how totalitarianism is bad

>> No.17831445

All his nonfiction books are worthwhile. Homage to Catalonia is one of the most remarkable books to come out of the 20th century. Down and Out is a fun classic. All his essays are entertaining; try 'The Spike' and 'Why I Write'. Maybe hold off on Wigan Pier until you're sure he's got your interest.
As for his novels, Burmese Days and A Clergyman's Daughter are not great novels, but they provide a great deal of insight into Orwell. The same could be said of Aspidistra, though I found it less interesting. Coming Up for Air is the first novel he wrote which is truly successful in what it tries to do.

It's considered his least significant novel, but by chance it was the first book of his that I read and I was absolutely hooked. Nice to see someone else appreciates it.

If you don't understand political nuance, do yourself a favor and don't try to understand the Spanish civil war.

>>17830493
He literally talks for several pages about how "this is not intended to be an accurate history of the war, just my own understanding of it based on my experience". What the fuck does he have to say to appease you people

If you didn't like Down and Out you probably won't like Wigan. The modern appeal is in a voyeuristic enjoyment of desperate poverty in an industrial setting.
