I'm pretty sure most posters here used to be massive nerds addicted to video games and/or anime before making a conscious effort to "get cultured" by reading books. The 4chan userbase doesn't actually vary as much between boards as most people think.
Personally I don't give a shit if people use anime reaction pics or whatever, as long as they talk about literature. People who bitch about anime images are really using them as an excuse to talk about something that isn't literature. Many of the posters here are really just nerds forcing themselves to enjoy literature, and if they see an excuse to talk about something else they'll jump on it. The target group is children and teenagers, which overrate everything they consume so any popular or recommended anime/manga should be treated with low expectations.

I think this is definitely true. This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot actually. I and all the other boys I know grew up pretty much abandoned to ourselves. We wasted our time on video games, entertainment, Internet forums, basically just nonsense without any even really clearly articulated form or function to any of it. At best, we spent a lot of time playing more or less meaningless pick up sports. It’s made me realize that there were really no expectations whatsoever placed on us as young people. I’m now and entering my late twenties and I can say there really aren’t any still. The most there ever have been were like “do good in school” or “do good at work” which are really just kind of breeding you into this student/employee mentality and nothing else. Even an author of today has to discover his affinity for reading on his own, usually in his 20s. Then I go and read the biographies of 20th century and 19th people and you see clearly that these things were fostered and cultivated in them from a young age. Point being, we’re all in the same boat I guess. We were kind of abandoned to ourselves and most of else fell into that stuff and it was bred into us long before we bred literature into ourselves.

Most of it is garbage, but this applies to any medium. There are some real gems there, but these are often ignored because muh cartoons. Also, occidental animations receives more exposure worldwide, due to being more often nominated for awards than japanese animation.

Manga is a more diverse medium, with even more outstanding work. Many of these wouldn't make it as anime because they don't sell enough.

Yes, they have actual novels as well, one that I recommend (and recommend its anime adaptation as well) is Shiki.
Don't let the zany character designs filter you (they almost did for me), it's actually a well written and fairly tense story involving a group of vampires settling in a rural Japanese village and the local doctor struggling to figure out why the death rates are increasing so quickly/how he can save the lives of his people.
