Is reading crucial for one's personal development and well-being?

yes

Yes unless you were born before civilization and belong to a tribe with a rich oral history.

You're supposed to do more than just reading. Crucial=/= only thing.

Yeah, but it's continous reading that is key. My friends who read a bit in school and then stopped are slightly less "personally developed" than I. The more correct way is that they stopped developing after they and are kind of trapped. The one who never read to begin with (but is smart enough to read a book when he feels like it now), is about as well-developed as myself and the others who frequently read.

Well them and many others. The Homeric stories were originally orally given for instance. The proto-germanics and celts didnt even bother to write their oral traditions down. I'm sure theres even some modern day tribes in the Amazon rainforest that don't need books because their oral traditions are still strong.

I don't think anything in civilization is necessarily needed to healthily develop, that just wouldn't make any sense since our species didn't originally have civilization. However stories seem to be something we need in order to orient ourselves and give us some grounding to come up with our own thoughts off of. Books fill this role for us but oral traditions probably fulfill this just as well if not better, depending on the person. Of course we need writing in modern civilization so having an oral tradition is pretty much impossible to establish, it probably takes eons for a tribal culture to develop a decent one in the first place.

That doesn't make sense. Can you write that again in a more cohesive manner?

He's already set for life financially, has a beautiful wife, he's ripped, plays minecraft and reacts to youtube videos as a job, and runs the largest youtube channel run by an actual person that he's said he just considers a hobby at this point.

Him reading to flex would be the most unnecessary shit ever, plus he's not even the sort of person that would do that, especially since normies don't even give a fuck if you read anymore.

You may be right. I might be overrating his character here but I think its also because his following is huge its largely made up of teens and younger people, so he's trying a bit to teach them what he thinks are good habits. He's also said in the past that he used to read a lot as a kid, even stuff like the Iliad from his grandad but fell off it as a teen, so his experience probably enforces this belief about it being something good for kids to get into.

It all depends on what you read. It all follows the exact same principles which /fit/ uses:
If you 'eat' (read: read) trashy books like YA, you will get 'fat' (read: brainlet) and useless.
But if you 'eat' healthy, good books like the Western and Eastern canons, then you will be 'fit' (read: well-read) and eventually a transcendent being who has mastered reality by following very specific books which are useful for all aspects of life.

>spiritual growth
If you read spiritual sophistry like the bullshit of those who are 'spiritual but not religious' write, yes.
But if you know what esoteric texts to read which are reliable and well-translated (better if you can read the liturgical language), then no.
>personality
I need a definition for this, but if you mean personality as in attitude, it can sometimes happen if you misread books like The Art of War and The Prince and you apply it in your job or so unironically, www.
Just make sure to not take anything literally and do not get influenced by the author's attitude, and you're set.

I see. I'm 20 yrs old and after lurking in this board for a year or so I got hooked on mccarthy novels. Recently started the border trilogy and wondering if the fatalistic, grim atmosphere of the books (especially Outer Dark&Child of God) is going to encourage me to turning into a miserable hateful schizo or something.
