Was it just me, or was all of the environment/ecology stuff a little preachy? Otherwise I thought it was great.

Its not a very good story either.
Its all around awful, to be frank.

I thought the anti-messianic and anti-eugenics themes were good, and I loved how the politics played out with Duke Leto in the beginning.

Herbert?

I actually never got the ecology theme. It felt simply like a background element than an actual part of the story.

There were so many aspects that it is only natural some things felt less prominent to some readers.

I haven't read it in awhile, but I have a feeling it feels more preachy today with all the global warming/climate change stuff going on.

preachy? wait until you get to book 3. look, the whole thing was inspired by an article Frank Herbert was writing on desert ecology. if it had been an article about buttsex it would have been called "Hole" and you'd STILL be complaining it was too preachy.
