hello im looking for some recommendations for good books. i have just tried reading gravity's rainbow and it was too confusing so i gave up. also earlier than that tried reading infinite jest and gave up as well. so im looking for something not too complicated and long (under 400 pages) and am gonna try to work myself up to reread those books in the future. some books im thinking of getting include the bell jar, naked lunch, the stranger, as i lay dying, the sorrows of young werther, portrait of the artist as a young man, the old man and the sea, slaughterhouse-five, would these be good places to start. books ive already read include most that were assigned in high school in the us, the picture of dorian gray, and american psycho. thanks

Any of the books you listed would be fine to start with, but Naked Lunch will be more confusing than either IJ or GR, both of which would start making some sense if you just kept on reading. Don't expect to understand anything you have not finished, many books do not pull things together until you are good ways through or even at the end. Also, nothing wrong with not understanding, learn to finish books.
