There's the academic who survived the Stalinist purges and is now having flashbacks to that time.
There's his daughter whose long bitter marriage is collapsing around her.
And the and the journalist who's investigating the academic because he suspects he was never in Russia at the time, and then he falls obsessively in love with the daughter and sacrifices this whole career to become a lens grinder in Omsk.

The main protagonist is turned into a book in a public library. He collects dust on the shelf as people come and go, reading and putting the book down again. The novel describes the lives of the many people who are interconnected in strange ways, and who all pick up this book at some point. The main protagonist doesn't know what book he is until there is a fire and the librarian is desperately trying to save as many books as possible. The librarian picks up the main protagonist, but instead of saving this book, he throws him deeper into the flames. Amidst the rubble and the shattered glass, the main protagonist is able to see himself reflected and finally discovers what book he was all along. The Bible :D
