Just finished this book. The ending was emotionally gut-wrenching; I really enjoyed this book. What did /lit/ think of For Whom the Bell Tolls?

one of the few book I am ashamed to say that I couldn't finish. Is it worth taking it up?

The way he sets up the bridge as a kind of complete moment of Da Sein is well worth the kind of weird pacing the book follows. Amazing book.

I enjoyed the existentialism as well; sobering stuff

Most people seem to hate it but I liked it. It's not a masterpiece but it's very good.

His translations of Spanish are inept and annoying. I otherwise enjoyed the book.

I don't know, I kind of liked the Spanish dictation. I liked trying to find out what Spanish word he was trying to convey in English, maybe it helps that I'm currently learning Spanish right now.

Great book. The whole outsider/insider dynamics went over my head when i read it when i was 20 but it was quite a good read and the ending is really good. Maybe some of the best hemingway i've ever read.
I do prefer books that are truly gut wrenching though. I once went into a library to read and after reading the twist/reveal, absalom absalom gave me an amateur c-section. I only survived because the library heard it screaming "i dont hate it" and my shrieks.

Didn't like this one. I've always thought that there are two kinds of Hemingway readers: those who like TSaR and those who like FWtBT. I'm certainly the former.

Mostly disliked it. Agonizingly long exposition and oddly stilted writing. Not a very exciting story either. Not very insightful and nothing happens. It does create a vivid picture of that environment but it gets so old after a while. Managed to finish it and was underwhelmed

i've read TSAR, FTA, moveable feast, old man, and all of his short stories. How does this one compare to the rest?

Pretty divisive. Its hemingway doing stream of consciousness and showing how war isnt all battle. Its actually mostly not battle - also outsiders and insiders!

I think it is amazing. "Today is the only day in all the days that will ever be."

I don't mean to make a claim for Hemingway as the "greatest" or anything like that, but I am sincerely glad to have read him. I am thankful for his work and its Hemingway-ness. When its good, its really, really good.

It’s really good. All Hemingway is really good, if we are being truthful. Mostly because he was a truthful writer.
