What are some good complimentary essays or criticism about the Iliad or the Odyssey that can give me some deeper insights into the texts.

>starts with Auerbach who completely misunderstood Homer (and most books in Mimesis really)
What a pity, I thought you'd finally posted something worthwhile. Thanks for the effort though I guess.

I picked this and the world of Odysseus to start with.

Excellent choices, both of them are classic books of criticism. I'd also recommend Simone Weil's The Iliad ot the Poem of Force for a lyrical interpretation of the poem.

I saw that one but it’s written by a women described as a “social activist” and the work as an “iconoclastic deconstruction”. That set my modernist bullshit alarm off, I want to understand how the Greeks understood Homer not a political work about pacifism. If I have misjudged it though please tell me I wouldn’t want to miss out on something actually informative.
