>book about tennis
>the author self-insert is a nationally ranked prodigy instead of a mediocre regional player
really makes you think

If there is a self-insert it most certainly is not Hal.

hal is definitely inspired by younger dfw, with the whole being smart and depressed and his mother being based on his real mom

The young DFW was not depressed, he had given up competitive sports and already published Broom of the System by the time depression hit. Suppose I should not expect much from someone who thinks IJ is about tennis.

didn't he have a mental breakdown while he was in college?

It was after Broom of the System, I don't recall exactly when, almost bedtime here. It was near the end of his education or shortly after, either way, he had already given up on competitive sports. He pretty much gave up on sports in his first year of college, realized he did not have what it takes to make it to the show, so he played for the love of it and focused on writing and math.

it is about tennis, amongst other things

based retard

DFW is spread across a bunch of characters: Hal, JOI, Orin, Gately, Erdedy, Gompert. There's others I'm probably forgetting.

>> No.17772619

Hal is DFW in many ways, DFW interviews at Amherst are very similar to Hal at Arizona State at the beginning of the book.

Because reading about mediocrity is such an endearing passtime. Share with us your Twitter OP

Idris Arslanian gave off the biggest self-insert vibes If I'm being honest or that could just be me thinking the self-insert is me self-inserting which could be what he was intending. Or I could just be reading too much into it.
