Its a good book, and you don't need to spend years on it. I went to a private catholic boarding school where we couldn't read anything except the Bible after 17h00 and until 19h00, so I went through it dozens of time. Can't say I memorized much of it, tho.
Anyway, if you are going to die soon, either you choose to fight it or you make peace with it, if you choose the second option, then reading the Bible may help you do so.
