Does /lit/ approve of rap music as a form of poetry?

>> No.17765284

>>17765270
no it's a form of music, the lyrics are secondary, and the poetic quality of the lyrics are like quaternary at best

Poetry? No. But do some tracks have impressive, entertaining and witty wordplay? Sure. But its pure kitsch.

this man knows. doom is so much more about how it sounds than what it means, just read his lyrics. there must be more poetical rappers but even the ones that care about telling a story will still put how a verse sounds over its meaning, otherwise they'd be writing poetry instead of rap
>serial killer hidin' murder material in a cereal box on top of your stereo
sounds cool though

Based. Aesop Rock far and above any other rapper in terms of his lexicon and meaning. Consistent too I think his latest album was probably my favourite after Float

I non-ironically respect the ability some rappers show to freestyle, which is probably something most poets couldn't do anymore (in the past they could, it's not hard to find older poets bragging about how they could "talk in verse"). I don't know how strictly do rappers stick to a certain meter in English, which might not be as an important aspect in rap either way, but in my language I've noticed they do tend to follow one.
I think hip hop has given less attention to songwriting today than they did in the past though, it seems that production is now more important, which is a shame, but it also makes this discussion sort of futile, but it's not like this could be discussed in /lit/ anyhow.
Anyways, a song I really like for how its written is Biggie's Niggas bleed, just look at these lines:
>Niggas bleed just like us
>Picture me bein' scared of a nigga that breathe the same air as me
>Niggas bleed just like us
>Picture me bein' shook
>We can both pull burners, make the muthafuckin' beef cook
>Niggas bleed just like us
>Picture a nigga hidin'
>My life in that man hands, while he jus' decidin'
>I'd rather go toe to toe with all of y'all
>Runnin' ain't in my protocol

A lot of people he collaborated with also looked more at the poetical side of rap. Eyedea (pbuh) was maybe the closest to him

>> No.17767593

no, i don't think of rap or music lyrics as poetry but i will say that a lot of rappers are very good writers.

bladee is a good poet (or was), Ecco is mainly a good musician though. he's got some great writing in places though

I hope bladee goes back to writing lyrics instead of just making it up as he stands in front of a mic
