I'm incapable of retaining any information I have read in books.

Anyone know what's wrong with me?

Are you a coom brain? You could be suffering from brain fog
If not, ADHD. Seek medical advice and read the adult ADHD toolkit

There's nothing wrong with you, that's just how the memory works, particularly after adulthood. Everything that isn't associated with strong emotions is gradually discarded by your brain, unless you manage to make it stick through repetition.

There's 4 ways in which you can take in information to remember, namely: reading, writing, listening, speaking.

If you're having issue with memorization from reading try the other 3 ways: take notes and write short essays about what you know and what you've read, listen to audio books and lectures, speak on what you know and what you've read.

I can remember books but hardly any specific details, i usually only retain the general gist of the book. Is this normal or am i retardo?

You don’t care about what you read or have no passion for the subject matter

also this

Live a healthy lifestyle. Try to engage with the ideas you read. Honestly, I don't think it's a big deal if you forget plot points of the novel you've read. If you read philosophical fiction, try to understand the ideas author tried to convey. Making notes helps, but I never really take notes myself. I'm not proud of my memory, but I usually try to place the ideas I read into a broader context, try to understand why would someone write about this topic in that sociohistorical context, etc. Sometimes I also walk in my apartment and think how I half-jokingly explain some points I've read about to my non-existent /lit/-frens.
tl;dr. Engage with the text and be healthy

I think this is normal. Your brain is not a memorization machine.

When my daughter was two, she wanted to help me with some minor repair task I was doing. I let her "help" and she cut her finger. Ten years later, she remembered that incident, but had almost no memory of the house we lived in at the time.

If you want to remember books, you could hurt yourself as you read, or just do what other people do: take notes and re-read the source material.

I'm in a book club, and I always remember those books better because we have an hour of group discussion about them.
