Explain cigarettes to me. I can't understand why so many writers who are smarter than I'll ever be pick them up. Is it just the hipster thing to do?

>> No.1776136

Which writers are you talking about.

I dont see how the most consumed habit in the world is 'hipster' its not very hip when its a gazillion dollar industry.

>> No.1776143

I don't think it's about whether you ever pick them up or not, it's about whether you can ever put them down again. For some people, once you're hooked, that's it - you're never satisfied until you get that nicotine hit. Without it, it feels like your brain's not working properly.

I think /lit/'s favorite writer knew exactly what I like about smoking:
"I often wonder about the hours when a man sits alone, watching the smoke of a cigarette, thinking. I wonder what great things have come from such hours. When a man thinks, there is a spot of fire alive in his mind—and it is proper that he should have the burning point of a cigarette as his one expression.”

I like that it's a very easy release from the people around me. I honestly don't mind that I have to go smoke outside or anything. My cigarette breaks during work are the best part of my work day. I get to leave the shitty noises, go outside, sit on a bench, and inhale something that gives me a pleasant, yet mild sense of relief that I get from nothing else in just such a way.
When I was younger working construction, I would ease onto my couch with a long, contented sigh as I popped the top off of a bottle of beer and lighted a cigarette. It's enjoyable, it helps with stress, and unless it's to bum a cigarette, people leave me the fuck alone while I'm doing it. The buzz only happens rarely, but it's just a heady dizziness that isn't uncomfortable to me.
I think people who hate on smokers are simply arrogant and looking for a basis of superiority which they've found in the pariah-like status of smokers in modern society.
But then I also think smokers who treat it as a right and don't think we as smokers should be considerate to non-smokers regarding the way it smells, the health concerns, etc. are fucking deluded.

It really doesn't do it the same way, strangely enough.
The first couple cigarettes I smoked each brought about fantastic letters to people who I wasn't sure how to talk to. After that the effect sort of died off and eventually it became something of a nervous tic that happened once or twice a day. I've cut down to one a week, but I am still not entirely sure if I want to quit just yet. (It's been about two years.)
The thing is, yeah, it's bad. But that's why I started it in the first place. I wanted something self-destructive because I was tired of trying to be healthy and reasonable all the time. I'm not sure if it's made any great, lasting impact on my life yet (lol lungs) but I can say at least that I've had a number of wonderful moment that were improved by the knowledge that I was indulging in a little self-destruction. Maybe that won't feel justified in the end. Who knows?
