what makes him good?

One of the best writers of different vernaculars and dialects, a general 'fuck you' attitude towards anyone who would criticize his works, and an ability to tackle the big issues of his day (industrialism; racism; slavery; etc) with a soft touch and a light heart.

Also a stubborn insistence on paying all his debts when it would have been easier to just go bankrupt.

Also, I never read his Joan of Arc book. Has anyone here read it, and if so do you think it is any good or worth reading?

Straight up fun to read and a great writer. For some reason he seems to omega filter pseuds, 90% of the time hes mentioned here its people raging at his work.
