How come in all of these reading charts, The Hobbit is considered at the top in the majority of cases?

It's like a 6/10 at best. I just re-read it as an adult.

Like the story is kinda nothing
>Bilbo is useless
>"I wish I was at home at my hobbit hole"
>Wizard saves the day several times
>Bilbo gets the ring
>Now Bilbo saves the day several times
>Dwarves do nothing the entire book but become jewish in the end
>EPIC WAR which barely takes up a chapter and Bilbo is knocked out for most of it
>Everyone goes home
Even as a kid I didn't think this was that good. Same with Dune, it's just a lot of meandering and suddenly with one life changing moment everything is solved.

Not really any build up or anything to leave you with once it's over.
more like
>Yeah ok.

I've heard more recommendations for everything made by 'Er Gen' than I can count. Desolate Era is also up there, just like I Shall Seal The Heavens. It got to the point I went into backlash mode and just refuse to read them..
Currently stuck in the 'system'-plot, reading all of the shitty ones in a row. Just caught up with 'Tales of the World Devouring Serpent'. It was seriously horrendous the first 100 chaps, decent after 200 and actually very interesting after 250.
>i'm a centimeter snake, fuck those rats
>i'm a meter snake, fuck those jackals
>i'm a kilometer snake, fuck those killer whales
>i'm a motherfucking space snake, swalloing meteors and fighting intergalactic battles
At this point I can't put it away, and then I caught up. Guess that's the plus side of western stuff, they don't do shit chapter-wise but rather on a per-book basis.

Candies as in hot tips?
>emperor's domination
The only 'old monster in young body' done right. He always wins though, not a single loss throughout.
>martial world
It's alright in the beginning, gets better later, becomes extremely good and then the author just gives up, pisses on the MC's head and quits the novel with a shit end. If I could, I'd send him some knives to chop of his fingers for ending the story like that.
>gourmet of another world
It's a sort of comedy, a guy owning a restaurant in a fantasy world, cooking superb food with some cultivation elements. It's more of a gag-novel than anything else.
>library of heaven's path
Strange world where 'teachers' are the ultimate profession and strongest warriors. MC basically took over the worst teacher in the world that suicided and then becomes the greatest teacher of them all, spewing heavenly clouds with his mouth, causing golden springs to flow whenever he starts teaching. It's alright.
>rebirth of the thief of who roamed the world
The only 'mmorpg that rules the economy' novel done alright. It's pretty good but turns worse closer to the end.

I guess these are good starters, imo.

I think published works catering to this niche are really rare. You might find something on online (erotic) literature sites like storiesonline.net

I haven't tried it yet but Always On Guard by Jay Cantrell is supposedly a fantasy romance worth reading. I am just hesitant because all stories of his I've tried have featured promiscuous sluts and whores which makes me wary. As far as I can tell most western guys aren't purityfags at all, though, so I guess it might be worth a try.

The MC (Able/Art) may or may not have ever actually been born in our world. I only read the books once but I interpreted it mostly as occurring within the imagination of his mother. There are a few different ways you could take the appearances of the real world and the drowning & water-healing motifs. Some people take an interpretation where he and his brother were twins in the womb, but his brother absorbed his fetus there before birth. Able's descent into Mythgarthr may also be a bit of misremembering, though - he may have literally drowned as a boy in the woods, his body never found. Or it might have been that he was never baptized before his death and that this is what his mother imagines his soul going through to find its way to heaven. Anyways Wolfe gave an interview where he said that he was basically just following the example of Alice in Wonderland, where you need to go from the familiar to the unfamiliar, but of course Wolfe in interviews is always very guarded and gives the least relevant bit of truth. (When asked about Sev's origins, he said that he wanted someone that would be easy to make cosplay for.)

So I'm just about finished this and I'm noticing a few major discrepancies with the main series.

1. Gardens of the Moon starts in the 96th year of Emperor Kellenved's reign
2. Kellenved's Reach reveals that technically as the first emperor of a new dynasty the years are counted from his birth year. Kellenved lies and says he is 70 years old.
3. Therefore Gardens of the Moon takes place 26 years after the founding of the Malazan Empire.
4. This of course fucks up the established timeline BADLY because there are multiple characters who were very old are now only in their 40s and 50s. (example: One of the Crimson Guard mentions that he has a granddaughter who is a full adult.)
5. There is a line in House of Chains where Nok explains that living in the Deadhouse granted them all extended lifespans.
6. Toc the Elder doesn't even appear in this prequel series despite the main series saying that he was among the very first people to join Kellenved.

Hell yeah. Big differences in situational plot and a few characters. Hammond's a total dick, Grant is like the fucking Terminator. Unstoppable and steals the show, doesn't talk much. Also shows how mindlessly cruel Hammond's operation was. Combining dinosaur DNA with extant reptile and amphibian DNA resulted in hundreds of "trial" generations as they perfected the right combination that they just killed before or soon after birth.

Here's my take on Mercerism

The majority of people in the world of DADES find worth in a simulacrum. Coined by Jean Buadrilliard, simulacrums are realities that are conjured to fill the emptiness in people’s lives. Living on a bleak, abandoned earth forces many to resort to this escapism. The character of John Isidore exemplifies this process. Living in an empty apartment complex, John is horribly lonely. To ail his empty heart, John utilizes this universe’s religion: Mercerism. The success of this religion in creating a simulacrum coincides with Baudrilliard’s phases: “it is the reflection of a profound reality; it masks and denatures a profound reality; it masks the absence of a profound reality; it has no relation to any reality whatsoever; it is its own pure simulacrum.”. Like a theatrical performance, a simulacrum is a planned event that provides a sense of order and direction. Mercerism in the novel completely submerges its users within its alternative reality: “he experienced them, the others, incorporated the babble of their thoughts, heard in his own brain the noise of their many individual existences. They—and he—cared about one thing; this fusion of their mentalities oriented their attention the hill, the climb, the need to ascend”. Isidore escapes from his apartment and enters a false reality. However, this appeases him because it provides a human collective that he can be a part of. The comfort of being part of a crowd has always helped individuals feel important. Group efforts provide a sense of higher importance. Mercersim does this perfectly. This illusory experience removes its users from their bleak, dust filled world and offers a unified journey with others collaboratively ascending a hill. This offers them escape from their personal despairs and gives them a sense of belonging and purpose. By participating in an engaging simulacrum, people are able to escape empty lives and fill themselves with hope and longevity.

>every single character in this book is just copied from the first law
There were definitely echoes from the first law, but I think most of the characters were unique enough. I don't think any one was meant to be deep. The cast was like a traveling freakshow, you're just supposed to gawk at how weird they are.
Friendly is my man. Love the autistic little bastard.

>>17719768
Being one dimensional isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think what hurts the First Law the most, is that it tried to be deeper than what Abercrombie was capable off. He just wants to write about assholes getting in of and out of sticky situations. All that world building and lore stuff was getting in the way.

Erikson is a big fan of show don't tell. He doesn't like big sections of exposition.

The Deck of Dragons is similar to a Tarot Deck. It gives readers of the deck a glimpse into who the major players are in any given event.
Elder Race is any race that is no longer actively involved in the world. The main 4 elder races where T'Lann Imass, Jaghut, Forkrul Assail and K'Chain Che'Malle. Most of these elder races have been dead for hundreds of thousands of years.
Warrens are intentionally left mysterious. They are the source of magical powers. Erikson doesn't like Hard Magic systems like Sanderson or D&D. Magic is uncommon but you can find very minor practioners in most cities. Real mages like Tattersail are rare and individuals like Anomander Rake are Unique.
The very simplest way to explain Warrens is like its a separate dimension. A user of the Warren of Tellas (Fire) could summon fire from this dimension to blast somebody. This is a very oversimplified way of explaining it.

An Ascendent is not a God. They are an entity who is heavily influencing things and people. Not all Ascendents are Gods, but all Gods were once Ascendents. Some Ascendents are more powerful then Gods. Its all very complex.

Book 2 & 3 are incredible.

Yes.
Elder races are just older races of non-humans. Think Elves, Orcs, or Neanderthals.
Warrens are realms / worlds. Magic comes from the Warrens. So they're common in the sense that every spell caster can access at least one.
The Deck of Dragons is a tarot set with cards depicting key figures from each warren. The deck itself is dangerous.

>>17734954
>Erikson doesn't like Hard Magic systems like D&D
What a shit take. Malazan is a GURPS campaign. If anything he tries to explain D&D lore.

>An Ascendent is not a God. They are an entity who is heavily influencing things and people
They're part of Ericson's guide to godhood. And the only difference between an Ascendant and a god is that gods have followers.

>Nietzschean to the extreme
>Extremely manipulative, everyone around him falls under his spell
>An antisocial killer with no regard for human life under the guise of a charming and helpful friend

It’s quite an interesting and well written show. Highly reminiscent of Neuropath with the serial killer stuff, but the themes and heart wrenching conversations about God and death are pure TSA.
