Anyone want some smut reviews? Too bad, I'm gonna do it anyway. I'm no professional, so I'm just gonna do it out of three stars - bad, meh, good. Here's the first one I read, so I thought it should be the first I review:

Building Harem Town book 1
Story: 2/3
Standard isekai fare. Starts with the protagonist waking up in the new world - no wasting time on earth. He wakes up to find three women worshiping him as a god who has fallen out of favor, but who has been around in this world for all its history. They give him actual RPG stats and quests, which is a bit of a turnoff for me, but it said litrpg in the title, so I can hardly fault it. The characters are fine, though the MC is a bit typically slow on the uptake and completely unwilling to play the part, which is a bit of a turnoff. Three girls, one stereotypically believing, the other skeptical, and the third kind of forgotten in the mix. About half the book is devoted to the girls using primitive technology to build things. It's moderately interesting, but it makes a common problem of being too in depth for someone that doesn't care about it and not in depth enough for people that do. For example, I still don't really have a good sense on what a 'hammer stone' is or how they were 'winding cordage' from plant fibers. And I'm not totally drawn into the MC's main drive of 'why am I here being worshiped?' That's just kind of how isekais work. It would be like having the main motivation of a WWI novel be the MC trying to learn who Franz Ferdinand was while he's already in the trenches. But in short, the story's fine. Cut down on the primitive tech (or go way more into it) and maybe have the third female join the group later to help with the pacing and break up the monotony of building.

Smut 3/3
The first proper sex scene comes about halfway through the book, which is a bit late for my taste, but the scene itself is very well written. There are two one on one scenes right after the other and then a foursome scene right at the end. Coupled with my complaints about the pacing above, I feel like they should have been spaced out more, and one of the girls didn't get a one on one scene at all. The saving grace was that the author did a very good job with titillation throughout the book, starting with the girls' lewd outfits, describing their bodies, and having plenty of nip slips and such before the actual sex hit. Definitely kept me going and probably the most physically arousing book I've read.

Nope, it's a novel. Just one with explicit sex scenes. I'm trying to write some smut books, so I've been reading a bunch. They're quick reads and there's dozens on Kindle Unlimited, which Amazon basically gives you an unlimited free trial for. Though I've been buying the ones I like too, both to keep track and support the author.

Like not grimdark stuff where there's all the edginess and protagonists getting fucked over just fun ultra-violence.
Ideally in smaller fights instead of army size wars too.

/sffg/, thoughts on this monster that I want to put in my book?

>At first glance, the creature resembled a turkey, albeit with the size, claws and fangs of its therapod ancestors. Then its plumage shifted and I began to notice the fingernails. Like a mockery of a child's art project, the illusion of feathers vanished to reveal its form was bristling with dark, vaguely human fingers, each as long and thick as my arm. I thought them vestigial but they squirmed eagerly. Then it noticed us, and the beast let out a roar

I actually work at an Amazon book store, so this might not work online, I have to admit. Amazon re-offers trials every so often. For Kindle unlimited, they re-offed immediately after your free period ends when you're at the store. Not only that, but this time I forgot and when I checked online, they offered me three months free literally the day after my last trial ended. We'll see what happens after that ends, but I've had Kindle unlimited for 7 our of the last 12 months and haven't paid a penny for it.

Just set a reminder in your phone to cancel on the last day. Then check if you can get the trial again the day after. KU's actually not that great of a service, so Amazon pushes the trials hard as fuck in the hope people just forget.

Well, reverend insanity certainly is that, tho not my cup of tea because antisocial protags aren't what I'm into when it comes to webnovels but it might work for you. Other options include Wolf Never Sleeps(just checked it's actually translated as The Wolf won't sleep), don't know why it popped into my head all of the sudden but I'd say it is an interesting take on isekai, not exactly unique, but unusual for sure. I'd recommend Vermilion but it's untranslated for the largest part and is unfinished to the point of abandonment but It has it's charm for MMO isekai setting story. Another one I haven't read but might suit you if you are looking for "interesting" is The Girl Who Bore the Flame Ring, it's fairly short so might float your boat without needing to invest much time. Something like Re:Zero is widely popular because of /a/nime but the novel's solid too. Ark 4 is what's currently airing, ark 5 is meh, by re zero standards, still head and shoulders ahead of most drivel, but 6 is solid and is nearly on par with 4.

If you are into cultivation novels I could reccomend a few more but the genre rarely does anything "interesting" as it's pretty formulatic so lets leave it at RI.

Yes that is what I was referring to. Of course older writers, who are acclaimed or not, should (in theory) be good safe from this. But in our current publishing industry there is just too much garbage being spewed while being praised for me to bother.

I don't hate all contemporary lit just because of the toxicity of modern publishing, but I have to admit that it turns me off. I also hate how black media in general has regressed back into slavery and Civil Rights narratives. Not that there aren't interesting stories still to be told about that(the Fred Hampton film is something new), but I'd rather see talented black authors novelize honestly contemporary black existence, or better yet, something where the overarching theme isn't explicitly about blackness. It's true that every story written is colored by the author's experiences, but agents don't trust average people to grasp subtleties.

What. It's a completely generic concept from shonen anime, like Naruto having whiskers due to having a fox spirit in him. If Sanderson does something similar it's because he's taking inspiration from the same places, not because he invented it. It's so generic you can't even say who it's being ripped off from, because nobody even knows who started the trend anymore.

I would have said the same but I can't really say Cradle is badly written. Characterization may be basic and play off cliches, but it's strong and consistent, every single character is almost instantly memorable. The plot may be generic, but it's relatively well paced (the second book lags a bit, but I can give that a pass), tightly focused, and has a clear goal and motivation for every character. The world building is brief enough that it doesn't bog the series down but still lets you form a clear picture of the political and geographic layout of things. Yeah, the prose is basic, but the series is meant to be light reading, so opaque prose would be meaningless.
In comparison, if Cradle were written by Branderson, each book would begin and end at the same point, but be 600 pages longer, have twice as many characters, and Yerin would be another Shallan. THAT would be badly written.

Cradle is unashamedly low brow but it plays to its strengths and doesn't let itself get bogged down in minutiae, which are objectively the most important aspects of making a series enjoyable. It reminds me of Codex Alera in that aspect. It's objectively silly (Codex Alera was literally written on a bet for a round of drinks), but it makes it work.

I'm not a reader of fantasy, but I'd like to give it a try. Specifically, there's a movie I love called Mandy, which features a reading from a non-existent fantasy novel, and I just love the style of it. Magical, but magic as chthonian, bloody and cruel, less wizards waving wands around and closer to pagan nature worship. Is there any fantasy that has this style, or was the filmmaker referencing someone in particular? Here's the passage:

>Under the crimson, primordial sky surrounded by the jagged rocks of the ancient volcanic mountain, the wretched Warlock reached into the dark embrace of the fissure until his hand touched a smooth glassy surface. Cold as ice. His fist closed around The Serpent’s Eye. Slowly he withdrew it and held it before him in the fading light of the blood-red suns. It glowed from within. A ghostly emerald light. From what I can tell Will Wight is too much of a normalfag to go for the threesome route even though he at least mentioned polygamy being a normal thing for emperors and made it pretty clear that Mercy's mom is not a strict believer in monogamy.

I absolutely can't see Mercy starting a love triangle drama, though, and I certainly don't want another character being introduced just to take her out of the romantic picture. Maybe she could just have Yerin lend Lindon to her to produce an heir at some point.

>“A rider,” Rand said breathlessly, pulling himself upright. “A stranger, following us.”

>“Where?” The older man lifted his broad-bladed spear and peered back warily.

>"There, down the....” Rand’s words trailed off as he turned to point. The road behind was empty. Disbelieving, he stared into the forest on both sides of the road. Bare-branched trees offered no hiding place, but there was not a glimmer of horse or horseman. He met his father’s questioning gaze. “He was there. A man in a black cloak, on a black horse.”

Ayyy, it was actually good. Just like the anon who recommended it promised it would be. Thanks, man.

Abercrombie can still be an edgelord at times. But he did manage to make it enjoyable for the most part. I was actually praying for the poisoner to succeed, despite him being a completely despicable person. I just wanted to see if he could do it. And that's how it is for most of the book. These people are all bastards, but you want to see them win in their own ways. And everyone had really satisfying endings.

I'm feeling pretty good about abercrombie again. So I'm thinking of diving into the next book. Heroes.

If only ever read the first one, Rated R, because they are published by Amazon and often aren't available as print, but that it was pretty much exactly what you are looking for. I really doubt that is the case. It's certainly cheaper to publish trash, and might more lucrative because trash authors aren't as protective of their IPs as they probably should, but that doesn't mean bad writing sell better than good writing. And I know this has been pointed several times but there is reason LoTR and GoT sell like hotcakes decades after they were first published while their inferior copy cats don't.
People don't want to read shitty writing if they can get better.

Professionals what?
Writers? Tolkien might not have been a "professional writer" but trying to argue his prose sentences structure and world development isn't superb is ridiculous. And, as much shit as Martin gets, his writing is also some of the best currently available.
Just because terry goodkind types(who can't write worth a damn) shit on acclaimed works doesn't make them any less acclaimed.

The point is that , even if peopel here like to be contrarians, if your work is good peopel are more likely to like it all thing being equal. If your work is superb peopel will flock to it no matter what... if they get a chance to read it.
The fact traditionally published books are getting worse and worse is not just due to the authors, but the publishing houses themselves for not getting better authors and editors in the first place. The fact I could easily find grammar and punctuation mistakes "properly published book" is a shame to the industry when (SOME) self publishers do a lot better whit something as basic as that.

The Harry Potter posting tumblerette or that girl who was way into Avatar are now here and turning their gay shipping fanfics into novels.
