90% of people are functionally illiterate. The vast majority of people in the world would be unable to read a mid-length college reading level novel and comprehend it.
Ironically, despite all of society's effort to educate the masses, functional literacy rates have decreased in the West. Most zoomers are unable to read anything longer than a tiktok caption or twitter reply.

I honestly think comprehension is the real problem rather than their ability to read. A cynic would say it's just NPCs being exposed for what they are, though.

thought this on the shitter a couple days ago. There are things that live off our waste. Even parasites thrive in shit. What if there's something out there whose refuse would be like the most valuable thing for humans? Like it shat gold or sweat crude oil or exhaled some rare, hard to acquire chemical?

Meh, it has always been like this. A decrease in functional literacy is the expected outcome of lower IQ immigration and native dysgenics. Something like that alone wouldn't tells us anything about cultural developments. And in fact we're thanks to audiobooks in a situation where more people than ever before are able to consume books.

School serves to train obedience, servility, and the ability to follow simple instructions, and it succeeds admirably
And whatever you think, you are just another consumer drone, trying to feel good about your impotence through your consumerist hobby

This the Americans adopted the Prussian model which instilled loyalty, but removed all the references directly to monarchy -- This is a core reason why Americans are so schizo.

>despite all of society's effort to educate the masses
American society has little goal in "educating" the masses. The goal is to make a functional consumer. Basic reading skills are one of the only things you need, and thats all most people have.

Basic reading gives you all the tools you need to read advertisements and propaganda.

Sure, but there are certain things that everyone should be good (or at least decent) at. Reading is one of them.
