You know, I could list a number of characters that suffered and died in terrible ways, but then I stopped to think and came to conclusion Arsene Lupin is the most tragic character I have encountered in literature.
We see his happy personality and all the loot he collects, but beneath that there is a lot of loneliness and saying goodbye to many people, some dying tragically, others he simply had to leave to protect them.
His ego grew and was crushed under the weight of people getting hurt or killed by being connected to him.
Out of five children one was stillborn and the other four had a sad childhood. None call him father as he didn't raise them, one daughter now believes him dead after he nearly fucked up her life, one son was kidnapped as newborn and Lupin is not sure if the man he found over two decades later is really him, the final two are result of him cucking another man, so he is not sure of paternity.
As many times he was given chance for happiness, something came up to fuck it up, and it seems he will be forever cursed by the need to save his suffering mother. She is long gone, so he searches for her image in all the women he encounters.
