I get it, the plays were written a long time ago, back when the art form was primitive but Jesus fucking Christ just stop it with the false adulation. The plays are frequently called the "Theban trilogy" and treated and recommended as a whole, neglecting the fact that a trilogy in Greek tragedy was something entirely different, and that these plays were written over a long period of time, without a unified plan. A reader should be aware of that, paying attention to the similarities and dissimilarities between the three dramas.

I think I've pieced together what happened. Anti-thebian play guy used to think it was an actual cycle called "The Theban Cycle", not just three plays related to Oedipus. He read them as if they were a cycle and talked about them as a cycle to friends. Eventually, someone corrected him and told him they weren't actually written at the same time or to be performed together. He got mad, because he'd misunderstood the reason for grouping them, and assumed that /everyone/ also had the same misunderstanding he had. He now corrects others in a vain attempt to remove the shame he still dwells on due to his misunderstanding.
