I've heard about this book a lot but I don't know what it's about.

If you're a literal autist, then yes absolutely. If you have average socialization skills it will all just seem obvious to you.

I listened to an audiobook version some time ago. It has it's moments but the book boils down to some usual self help information such as take a genuine interest, compliment people, avoid arguments etc.

I would recommend just reading the wikipedia page on this one. Actually, for most self help tip-styled books like this one the wiki is generally a very good condensing of the information with all the anecdotes taken out.

Complete waste of time, it's extremely dated and written for a very american setting.

I dated a girl who read books like this. She was really kind and appeared sociable, but somewhere behind her outward behaviour I detected a slightly veiled void, as if inside she still was an autist at heart and she ran from book to book in order to escape that reality.
That and the fact she appeared to be struggling with confessing feelings for me made the sex amazing.

Most of the autists here would do better to try to improve their core communication abilities, e.g. expressing yourself clearly, thinking quickly in conversation, being relaxed in public settings, etc. instead of boomer-tier marketing tricks like OP related. Try Cicero if you need a book to help you, though really you just need to go outside rather than read anything.

There are newer concepts for practiced socialization. Behavioral modeling is popular and treated as a serious thing by academics who study organizational efficiency and management. But overall I’d say you can distill an autistic observation of building social skills down to the idea that people have desires that they pursue to achieve personal fulfillment, and social behavior mediates a lot of that because we Live in a Society. So people often try to fulfill certain images that they want to project when socializing, unconsciously or consciously, and people who have high social skills are good at clocking what social image others are trying to project and what their desires are. They then project their own social image appropriate to building trust or good relations with the other person by appealing to their desires. But this isn’t to suggest you do this as a psychopathic robot, because in a sense it is impossible. You are also a human and derive your meaning from your own set of desires, and so people have varying interest or social value for you. So your social goals are also dependent on your own desires. So desires and image projection aren’t things only mindless NPCs do, it’s what everyone does including you, so there socializing can be a fulfilling experience of associating with people even if you are self-consciously attempting to employ an autistic awareness of people’s “archetypes” and such. But baseline socializing just involves knowing the specific cultural rules of being polite and respectful. As long as you show you have common respect for them then you can achieve neutrality with most people.

This is a great book. Anyone who tells you its either for autistics or for a sociopath HAS NOT READ THE BOOK. The whole POINT of the book is to become a more genuine person, and being kind to others and taking an interest in life. There's nothing "sociopathic" about it b/c you're not supposed to lie about being interested in people.

note that none of this advice works on people familiar with the book, because they know you're the sort of person who would read such a book and they're on guard against your transparent attempts at manipulation. This book is the sort of book, you always know who has read it and who hasn't, and not in a good way.
