it's sort of like the "understanding plato's republic" meme for me - there is a plot shown on the screen, there is a dark element implied but not shown that you have to work for and there are themes that you have to let live rent-free in your head for a bit to get out more

I haven't seen LH, or rather I saw it drunk and forgot it. I've seen Eraserhead and MD multiple times though and I couldn't say I figured out some central meaning to either of them, I get that one has to do with anxiety of fatherhood, the other with a dream version of (Hollywood) success but I take it there is more going on that that. Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man were easier to follow

the general consensus is, bill pullman is unable to satisfy his wife and releasing this energy through aggressive jazz music is not enough, in his mind she might as well be a slut with a history, so he kills her so hard he decides to repress the memory - he didn't do it, somebody else did it, he's not even the loser bill pullman anymore, he's young, hot balthazar getty, and his wife is a much more energetic and beautiful slut who would cheat on a powerful man WITH him - this illusion does not last and his guilt catches up with him in moments preceding his execution
evidenced by the man with no eyebrows shooting dick laurent in the head, but the pistol shown in HIS hand in the very next shot

The scene where Hal accidently goes to the wrong anonymous group, and ends up with all the guys with the teddy bears strikes me as particularly "lynchian". The atmosphere DFW builds as Hal walks through the building becomes dreamlike quickly, and the the whole meeting seems to me to be a personification/externalization of Hals psychological issues. And this externalization and interaction with ones psyche, and then the blurring of reality and dream, is something Lynch does in just about everything he's made

The main character killed his wife, out of jealousy. When on death row he experiences a psychogenic fugue in order to escape his fate. He transforms into Pete. He meets his wife etc. As he goes further into his fantasy, it starts to crumble and collide with his reality. He either makes up the backstory of his wife or it is a true backstory and basically ends up at the same place he is in. The idyllic life crumbles and his wife is exposed for the whore she might or might not be. He goes back into his own body when the reality and fantasy collide. Maybe he even killed her lover (that mafia guy irl). The end is him getting the electric chair.

It's a simple film.
