Is he worth getting into? Some people (like Zizek for example) swear by him.

Read The Lacanian Subject by Bruce Fink, it's only 240 pages long, it can be a bit dry but it's a good introduction. It's short enough so I think it'll give you a good idea as to whether or not you're interested in Lacan in general without wasting your time too much if you decide you're not interested. I doubt you'll get many good responses in this thread, so I thought I'd let a Lacanian text speak for itself.

He is, without a shadow of doubt, the biggest pseudointellectual that ever live. If you have any respect for yourself OP, you will stay away from this trash

Read secondary texts to grasp the interesting ideas, treat his lectures like the 4chan archives anytime you think his take on something is interesting.

I didn't say don't be rude to him, I just you should read him before you develop an opinion on him. Cope, dilate, etc.

Correction, you should read about him to form an opinion, I didn't suggest a book written by Lacan. Retard moment.

He's right, though. Very few of you types have ever read any of the thinkers you criticize. The only reason you despise them is because they have become convenient names you can paste next to preconceived culture war talking points.

lacan is worth it in the sense that he paints as accurate a picture of the impossible reality of the subject. how do you go about trying to describe something that manifestly defies all language? a bit like goedel, his point was demonstrating the difficulties in trying to reduce reality into a discreet field for the professional management of credentialed experts

I had a strange dream once about this man that still puzzles me. Any anons good at interpreting dreams?
I dreamt I was watching a French movie. A young man and a young woman were walking down a snowy forest while they giggled and kissed passionately. They wanted to have sex right there and then but for some reason they couldn't. There was something stopping them.
As this scene played out, the movie was narrated by the main character, the young man. The subtitles read:
>"The conflict between my Catholicism and my Lacanianism"
I have never read Lacan. I am a Christian but not Catholic.
Please help.

Psychoanalists the worst type of pseuds ever generated by mankind because they pretend they can cure people from mental illnesses.
He and everyone else in his field is just a step away to Ron Hubbard.
>B-BUT THEY CURED S-SOME PPL
their success to failure ratio is abysmal and the fault is always of the patient. Scientology also has its own therapy and since their brainwashing is stronger I bet they are more successful than these charlatans

>Psychoanalists the worst type of pseuds ever generated by mankind because they pretend they can cure people from mental illnesses.
They know they can't cure people, and that's not what they want in the first place. They want their patients to become addicted to talking about themselves (because everyone likes to talk about themselves) and receive their steady source of money. Also people like confessing their sins and being told it's not their fault they cheated on their spouse, that it's just their unconscious urges born from childhood trauma.
Mental health professionals in general are scum. Especially shrinks. At least psychoanalysts don't hook you on crippling drugs with permanent side effects to receive a commission from pharmaceutical corporations.
