Why can't you like him? He is sort of an every-man's philosopher, in that he interpolates his stories (which are beautiful and dynamic btw) with paragraphs of social abstractions that make you WANT to reread.

I don't know. Maybe I will try Lord Jim again. I didn't like Heart of Darkness that much, but I liked it enough to finish it.

The reason I wish I could like him is because my fave director is a big fan of his.

I read some short story of his (can't remember which) but I have this quote written down:
"...he who repairs a ruined house, and dwells in it, proclaims that he is not afraid to live amongst the spirits that haunt the places abandoned by mankind. Such a man can disturb the course of fate by glances or words..."

NUNS fret not at their convent's narrow room,
And hermits are contented with their cells,
And students with their pensive citadels;
Maids at the wheel, the weaver at his loom,
Sit blithe and happy; bees that soar for bloom,
High as the highest peak of Furness fells,
Will murmur by the hour in foxglove bells:
In truth the prison unto which we doom
Ourselves no prison is: and hence for me,
In sundry moods, 'twas pastime to be bound
Within the Sonnet's scanty plot of ground;
Pleased if some souls (for such there needs must be)
Who have felt the weight of too much liberty,
Should find brief solace there, as I have found.

That's from "The Lagoon" If you want something that isn't so confounded in terms of narrative style, try reading The Secret Agent. Most people seem to get turned off of Conrad because of his strange narration, and that one is very linear. It's also a great book to read in our post-9/11 world because of the similarities between Conrad's descriptions of Terrorism and how we see the concept today. Pretty crazy actually...

If you ever did want to start watching it, then you'd be fine starting with the new series, hell even around season 5 would be fine. The old series has its fans, and if you like that sort of classic cheesyness its fine, but you don't need to watch any of it.

>> No.1762290

>>1762255
Understandable. If you are interested his episode looks to be mostly stand alone, especially since he planned for it to be in last season. The trailer feels a lot like it could be one of his short stories.
