What makes 1984 such a widely-loved book? I read it and I was bored out of my fucking mind.

>> No.1761407

Hippie paranoia.

High school reading, times perfectly with the teenage spirit of 'rebellion'

>> No.1761411

it poses some interesting ideas on the relationship of a government and its constituents.

that's all that I liked about it, the first half of the book was slow as hell

Basically this.
High-school entry-level bullshit.

Your disregarding how fucked up the place they come from is. That dialogue makes sense because the world around them teaches them that sex is bad and only serves the state and violence is the answer to everything. Naturally they have unhealthy ideas about sexuality.

I was supposed to read that back in school but I never ended up reading it.

Sorry but BNW is an incredibly boring read.

>> No.1761470

I wouldn't say that I love it...
However, I've read a lot of Horror fiction in my time, but this book was the only book that really, truly horrified me.

It was one point in the story that did it, when this feeling hit me.

This. The modern world is rapidly moving towards that of BNW. My quandary is that I'm unsure whether it's necessarily a bad thing. Though ofc it is for lit.

>implying 1984 was written to entertain some stupid teenager from 2011

>> No.1761498

OP: What makes it widely loved is its long-standed place on the syllabus. Widely-read books are going to get more love, it's the law of averages. In fact I would agree with you on this one.

Yeah, I got the same feeling reading that book that George Orwell probably didn't lose his virginity until he was well over the age of thirty six.

Emmanuel Goldstein - Al Qaeda
2 minutes hate - Pledge of Allegiance/fox news
Telescreen - Surveillance cams
hate week - veterans day/flag day/ other non holidays
Junior Anti-Sex league - state- mandated sex ed that teaches children to be abstinent.
Though police - Department of Homeland Security
Ministry of "peace" - Department of "Defense" (both called exact opposites of what they are)
Newspeak - Political Correctness.
Our wars in the middle east are much like 1984's perpetual warfare. Enemies change frequently (USA helped Afghanistan in USSR-Afghan war) "Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia."
Miniplenty - FDA/USDA
Minitrue - fox news/FCC
Miniluv - Gitmo
Civilians are encouraged to spy on each other to ensure that they aren't enemies of the state. The DHS spreads paranoia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czoww2l1xdw
