1760357 No.1760357 [Reply] [Original]

Would anyone be interested in starting another /lit/ magazine?

It would focus on speculative fiction and fantasy.

This magazine would not compete with The April Reader, but it would compliment it.

/lit/ are faggots.
speculative fiction is only proper fiction. Who wants to read about two faggots talking, I'd rather read about what would happen if the government kept fucking us up the ass harder and harder to the point where it's 1984.

tl;dr: speculative fiction is only real fiction

>> No.1760418

Probably not, since there isn't really any speculation going on.

Alternative history, on the other hand, is certainly speculative fiction.

>> No.1760420

>>1760415
Nope. Speculative fiction is commonly a term for fantasy, science fiction and their respective subgenres. I've seen a fair few using it as a "not pew pew pew" science fiction genre as well, though.

>> No.1760421

What it's basically the same universe that we live in A.K.A not an alternate history or anything, but it's about how let's World War II ended for some other reason than the one history books tell us about. Some funny reason.

>> No.1760424

>>1760421
That would certainly fall under the category of speculative fiction!

>>1760420
>I've seen a fair few using it as a "not pew pew pew" science fiction genre as well, though.

Generally the term is used to categorize things that aren't "pew pew pew" science fiction nor sword-in-the-stone fantasy, though the term does cover both of those.

I'd totally like to do have a /lit/ magazine dedicated to stuff that is more up my alley.

If such a magazine were to start up, I would like to volunteer to be one of the first writers.

>> No.1760475

I think another webzine is a great idea but limiting the genres probably isn't since there probably won't be many submissions, if any. TAR needs competition because if it is ever going to be anything more than trash-- which it won't so a replacement zine is ideal.

>> No.1760559

I'd be all up for limiting it to just sci-fi and speculative fiction, no shield-and-sword fantasy nonsense.
I'd enjoy seeing all the dystopia, utopia and so-fort related stories.

>> No.1760973

This seems to be pretty well received, so I'll go ahead and get started on this. I'll be requesting submissions and providing applications for staff soon.

Stay tuned

I disagree. If there is a competing magazine, the stories won't get any better (not that I think it was bad in the first place).

By having this webzine handle speculative fiction and TAR handle general fiction (I'm hesitant to use the word "literary" as that would imply speculative fiction can't be) it allows people to have a better idea of what they're in for when they download either of the webzines.

>> No.1761027

I could have "subscriptions" of sorts where people enter their email address and are reminded when new editions are released.

>> No.1761040

Oh I didn't mean the submissions would be any better, I meant that TAR as a magazine is utter trash. TAR's idea of running a magazine is calling four people editor and copy pasting things people send them into a pdf.

I'm calling it now, if it ever even gets off the ground, then the life-cycle will be as follows:

Issue 1: Full of hope and energy, decent number of submissions.

Issue 2: Submissions fall off dramatically. The only anon planning to serialise something submits his second chapter. The thread about the issue seems to suggest it's well-recieved, but it's due to three anons actually reading it and everyone else ignoring the thread rather than even bother to sage.

Issue 3: Despite several threads encouraging content, three pieces are submitted. One of them lacks any punctuation or capitalisation at all, and the second is barely 1000 words long. The anon writing the serialised thing sits down the day before the deadline and hurriedly rushes something sub-standard, due to a feeling of obligation.

Issue 4: Everyone has forgotten about it by issue 4.

I'm fine having competition, but don't exactly understand why this can't just be a part of TAR. We don't deny fantasy or science fiction, quite the contrary we already actively publish everything you're suggesting. /lit/ is a relatively small place, you can't exactly snap your fingers and make more fantasy and sci-fi appear: I predict the only thing that is going to happen as a result of this is factionalization of an already small pool of resources with dwindling results for everyone. Eh, we'll see how this turns out.

>>1761181
