Georges Dumezil has written many books on comparative Indo-European mythology.
Evola (Revolt Against the Modern World) and Eliade (Sacred and Profane, Myth of Eternal Return) are useful for understanding pagan / traditional metaphysics.
Read "pagan" literature such as Homer, Virgil, the Eddas, Beowulf, Celtic myths.
Emperor Julian's Against the Galileans has pagan arguments against Christianity and is very entertaining as well.

The Eddas (there's two), then dive into the Sagas. Read Beowulf along the way. From there, move into folklore and archaeology.

Homer, then pick Plato, the Pre-Socratics, or Aristotle. Familiarize yourself with all three, but you have to pick one to branch out from there.

I have a very limited knowledge of Christianity, but I always thought that Catholicism was the basic form of Christianity. But while the tradition is admirable, isn't the whole idea behind the pope and all a form of idolatry? The problem with Protestants it’s what is actually heretic. They interpret scripture in a way that is largely political, not theological. You can commend their focus on scripture but the fact is that scripture is and always was merely one part of the greater whole that is the Holy Tradition. Catholics also recognize this but unlike Orthodox grant primacy to scripture. Orthodox believe in neither sola scriptura nor prima scriptura.

don't jump from one cult to another, learn about your own history instead, read the local folklore and learn the local folksong. it'll resonate much deeper than either. i gave christianity a chance but couldn't get over my deep instictive aversion, it made me nauseous. my problem with paganism is that it chooses to leap over centuries of history and decide arbitrarily that what muh ancestors believed at a certain point is authentic and what they believe afterwards was not.but if we go back back too far the connection becomes too hazy to be meaningful.
