I’m glad this image I made has been put to good use.

Also threadly reminder to read Bakker. Start with The Darkness That Comes Before. The Second Apocalypse series is part of the /sffg/ canon. Not understanding Bakker memes renders you blind to most of the relevant discussion that goes on here.

>> No.17599256

The more I write, the more I understand how easy Bakker's prose was to write.
>Copypaste KJV, Silmarillion, Crusades, Cormac McCarthy, and Wikipedia-tier philosophical passages into your setting for instant plotting, depth, and "impress 'em" factor.
>Sherlock Holmes effect: Kellhus always knows best, is always able to persuade others, always commands respect, because that's what the author wants.
>Grimdark gambit: when in doubt, just resort to the most horrific scenario possible.
>Betrayal plotting: 90% of relationships in the books revolve around betrayal and manipulation, some characters leveraging their power to gain something from others. It lends itself to shallow and boring character development, and it makes it hard to really care about the characters.
>Marvel shit: People complain about Marvel shit in Sanderson, but there's tons of it in Bakker too. "OOOHH the heckin dragons flying around blasting everything vomiting fire from their furnace maw while flying mages throw up Wards of sorcery, their heads radiant furnaces of light."
I enjoy Bakker's books, and shill him frequently in these threads, but let's be real guys, he's just a little bit of a hack. He's obviously much smarter than a tard like Sandersoom, but he's really just a genre writer with a little added zazz, not some literary titan like Borges or Joyce... even though he thinks he is, and apparently most of the posters here do too.

The Kobo dictionary support is abysmal. You also don't have a native translator or a direct Wikipedia acess by clicking on a word.

The hardware built quality is also slightly worse, not to mention that the books available on the Amazon library are generally cheaper and you're not force to buy certain editions. Kobo blocks you regionally.

I mean of course people are going to pay for you to throw fireballs if you're in a setting with heavy militaristic themes; one wizard could be worth hundreds of normal soldiers and would likely command a price to match. Additionally they also tend to have methods of scrying, glamour, and protection, and so make excellent spies (Bakker in particular loves this idea). Wizards can often literally create food and objects for themselves (D&D) or be literally superhuman and thus not needing much in the way of material wealth (Tolkien). There are also occasionally ways for wizards to literally create money (D&D 3.5e) and of course the ability to create or enchant magical items would fetch a high price as well (Elder Scrolls both lore and gameplay). And of course there are also scenarios where wizards can perform mundane feats such as construction using magical methods to manipulate material (ATLA is an easy example). Failing that they're almost universally literate and intelligent so they make excellent scribes, secretaries, magistrates, etc. This all assumes that wizards actually need to work and aren't in a setting where the powers that be provide them with funding in exchange for support because having wizards on your side is an extremely huge asset both politically and militarily (Star Wars).

Basically there's very little wizards can't do that normal people can.

>wtf is heuristic collapse?
What the fuck is /a/ heuristic collapse. A heuristic collapse, is the collapse of a heuristic into a decision.

>sense-making apparatus?
Put simply, your brain (should you possess one, the jury is still talking last I heard.) It refers more specifically to the complex system of 'conscious' and unconscious processes that generate your picture of what is and compare it against your (still generated) picture of what should be based on your cognitive ecology.

>"There is only that which is, which necessarily must remain cogent"
The only things that exist are things that exist. All things that exist must remain self-consistent inside /some/ framework which is not necessarily the framework your cognition evolved with.

>linguistic conciousness?
Consciousness follows linguistic tenets, which at their simplest mean that reality will be fractionated into objects, with an I at the center differentiating you from the world. Object/subject.

>pragmatic self-space?
This is the phrase I suspected would cause the most issue. Pragmatic in that it cleaves to an intentional path. Self-space in that it is centered around a differentiated I.

Because Bakker’s astute readers tend to be high-IQ and capable of advanced thinking, whereas the haters usually dwell in lower realms of the mind. (Not saying all of Bakker’s readers are intelligent, mind you; but those who are, are capable of discoursing about higher level philosophical and literary references. The same cannot be said of the fans of a Sanderson or his ilk.)
