No. I'd never do such a thing. Unfortunately, however, my computer's bios died, so I unintentionally did just that (posting from my phone), and I have done much more reading in the past few weeks that that has been the situation. It's not all bad. I enjoy books and of course I still do have my phone for occasional internets.

I actually just got rid of my TV/PS3, partly for that. My brother gets em, I get some much needed $$, and its space will be filled by a proper desk at which I can write, instead of craning down to my laptop.

Considered the comp before, but I like it too much. That and the dictionary/thesaurus is absolutely too fabulous to not have a keystroke away.

All the time! I bought House of Leaves, Complete works of HP Lovecraft and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy this year and I haven't read more than 20 pages in any of them. I get distracted with all this technology too easily. Last book I read was The Road last summer. Can I get some tips for not getting distracted so easy so I can just read some books?

writers used to write by hand or typewriter. those are single-purpose tools. but when you sit down to your personal computer, it's also your email, jukebox, 4chan, news, wikipedia, and infinite, infinite porn. I have long felt like the computer itself is a block to me; in response I try to write by hand more, but I wish I could type my stories. maybe i should look for a typewriter.

am i the only one who has this problem? i imagine it would be common.

You just need an interface that isn't too distracting, and the discipline to not multitask while you write. One thing that I think the type writer has over the computer is that the computer offers arbitrary deletion and insertion. While this is convenient, I think better revisions will come if you retype the entire thing and feel the flow again as you write it, although this would take a lot of time.

IDK...it might work, it might not. I think different things work for different people. I've been told things by one writer/teacher that have been contradicted by other, for instance. Writing is intensely personal; there is no right or wrong way, it's all about what works for the individual. That isn't to say you should ignore all advice, simply that one should never do something just because they 'heard it would help.' I read one line of advice by one author suggesting that you shouldn't use a thesaurus. Fuck that, I love my thesaurus. One say don't use anything to describe dialogue with anything other than 'said.' I respectfully disagree, and so do many other successful authors. Make your own voice in your own way, don't just try to copy everyone else's style, otherwise you'll end up with a voice so anonymous and grey it's worthless.

Why not just turn that function off? I only allow mine to red-underline misspelled words, nothing else. No replacements unless I say so. This also keeps me on my toes spelling-wise.

Yeah, I can't stand auto correct. It's so jarring for me. Word processors in general just frustrate me. Even the red underlining is too much for me, but I'm a little extreme like that.

I actually use a really strange text editor, and I format stuff using LaTeX. It isn't very user friendly, but it looks nice.

I think about it all the time. I don't know if I can do that. The computer is just too useful.

I have no cell phone, so I'd have no other way to be contacted.

I don't want to throw it out perse, I just want to not be so dependant on it. Or rather.. I want to enjoy other aspects of life just as much if not more..

I don't know what to do. I guess I'll figure it out eventually.
