What translation should I read. There is a 0% chance I learn it in its original language. Not proud of that, just being realistic. Remember reading The Odyssey in high school but I don’t even know what the translation was

Yes but in fairness Ulysses is generally the best at taking advantage of anything, so it's rarely a bad move to give him stuff to take advantage of (if he's on your side ofc).

You'll never get a straightforward answer regarding translations. It depends what you want to get out of the book as each translation is carried out with a specific goal. You can find text samples online and compare them to each other.

In The Odyssey, Achilles wishes he would have rather been a peasant farmer than the greatest warrior to ever live, as the afterlife is such shit compared to the land of the living.

I'd recommend the Fagles translation. Its language is easy enough to understand without dumbing it down to the point of losing all poetic merit.

the one family man among a horde of flesh-eaters and rapists. I don't blame him for bolting when he saw Achilles, I would have done the same. Really, Hector was one of the few humans involved in the Trojan war, surrounded by unfeeling demigods. I still think of the scene when he goes to visit his wife and kids, caked in blood and armed to the teeth scares his children, then he takes his horse-haired helmet off and comforts them. Dante was correct in his redemption of Hector, was correct in damning Achilles desu

I completely agree with this. I started reading The Aeneid after finishing both The Iliad and The Odyssey and I couldn't bring myself to get through it. Both the Homer works feel so much more dense and complicated while The Aeneid just feels like blatant Roman propaganda. Turnus just feels like a stereotypical "bad guy" and the whole book just feels so one-sided.
