>the incorporation of philosophy into his prose

setting aside the schools of magic, where else is there any real philosophy in the 2nd apocalypse series? killhouse's absolute/darkness that comes before? it's meaningless prattle.

no-god as a p-zombie ? i guess but has no affect on the story if it is or isn't.

maybe something about the souls/damnation/the outside? hard to see how that's unique considering most other fantasy series have their share of elaborate paths for souls/life after the "real world"

basically, it feels like you all fell for a big meme by thinking this guy has a lot of philosophy, because when you stop fellating him and take the giant scranc-shaped dildo out of your asses you realize that there's not a lot of meat on that bone(r).

1. mengeddea is a topos --> a place where earwa wears thin and the outside can poke through

2. time is meaningless in the outside. see mimara's judging eye, white-luck warrior, etc.

saubon's death at dagliash is occuring at the same time as his experience at mengeddea because it's bleeding into the outside where time is meaningless and making a link between those 2 space-time's within earwa

anon, don't get me started on this. I've done my homework and there's a reason I don't include 90% of the old testament. Calling stories like adam and eve, noah or solomon jewish is like calling hamburgers german: technically correct, but thats not who you're picturing when you think of it.

as for mythical creatures, the only one people are familiar with that is uniquely ours is the golem. That's not to say there's no jewish mythical creatures – people in the know might have heard of nephilim and dybbuks, and I've found a number such as the keresh (giant deer), the tzefardea (giant frog who creates more frogs when injured), the shedim (invisible bird people) and the shamir (a worm with laser vision), as well as the demons associated with the qlipphoth – but these are virtually unknown unless you actually make a serious effort to find them.

word of advice I try to pass on to everyone: if you bury your character's little quirks and personality traits as deep as they are in a real person, your reader is never going to find them, and is just going to assume there's nothing there. the human mind attaches to novelty, hence why readers get more attached to cartoonier characters than they do to John Q. The Scholomance[a] (Romanian: Şolomanţă [ʃoloˈmantsə], Solomonărie [solomonəˈrie]) was a fabled school of black magic in Transylvania, which was run by the Devil, according to folkloric accounts. The school enrolled about ten students to become the Solomonari. Courses taught included the speech of animals and magic spells. One of the graduates was chosen by the Devil to be the Weathermaker and tasked with riding a dragon to control the weather.

I have no idea why this book has received so much negative responses. It does everything well, it may not be a top tier story. In fact I liked it a bit less then I would expect from just thinking what it offered. But that maybe just due to my jadedness, or the fact I mostly read hard Sci-Fi.

The book is indeed a steampunk version of Firefly, and it is indeed action with a bit of comedy. But it dwells a remarkable amount on the tragedy of death, especially the deaths caused by our heroes on people working for the bad guys. And it does it well. It lends the story a certain sense of weight it would have lacked otherwise. The characters are all interesting and with exception of the Captain, they all have interesting backgrounds. They are also very broken, and only really function as a team. Which is nice to see, there is no mary sue here, these people do really need each other. Well maybe with the exception of our zombie navigator. But she is a women and these are modern times, so really there is little option for the author. The plot makes sense, and moves logically. But it's not the highlight.

The only negatives I could mention are love stories of our captain. They aren't that interesting, and while the actions of the captain fit with his character, the devotion these women show him do not fit such a character. But their mostly not very well done. The author could have done so much more with the backstory between the captain and a women who is his adversary. Which is a shame, because she is such good adversary. I listened to this as an audiobook during work, and it works very well as an audio book.

Just because there's scientific basis, doesn't make it scifi. Spiderman uses "radioactive spider bit him and mutated him" as its "scientific" explanation, doesn't make it scifi, it's fantasy. That's not a bad thing, just a fact. I love Dune, and the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films were pretty good, but not scifi.
I think Star Wars is less scifi than Dune. Droids exist for comic relief and there's no scientific explanation (no matter how flawed) for the Force, it's just "dude lmao all energy is one". To be fair melange isn't explained that well but at least it's not an infinite power source, and ends up causing great suffering to the people you use it most.

There was no scientific basis at all for central plot devices like melange and ego-memory. And I don't mean unscientific as in outdated, like phlogiston or luminiferous aether, but as in completely baseless.

FTL and force fields are very hand-waved, though I wouldn't put that outside (soft) sci-fi.

Yes. Seeing your life's work slipping away into a hugely successful TV series, simply because of your laziness and then seeing the finale fuck up so hard that it erases any enjoyment people had of your series at all because you were still too lazy to finish the series and give the showrunners a script to work from is worse.

I honestly feel bad for the fat man. ASOIAF was supposed to be his life's work. The first three books were fire. Then it got turned into a pop-culture abomination by a couple of hot shots who only wanted to make money.

Since the Big Twist (R+L=J) and the Big End have both been spoiled by the show, GRRM feels stuck. His great vision is spoiled, stillborn... and has nothing else to do but try to sift through the thousands of tangled and retarded sideplots he's gotten bogged down in. I can see why it's such torture for him to write. He must be losing his mind in that cabin desu. Look how long it's taken him to even start WoW. Then imagine another 2-3 massive tomes after that. He's probably hoping corona-chan will take him so he won't have it hanging over his head anymore. I doubt he can enjoy anything in life at this point, even his precious sportsball games must feel like a painful distraction.

At least Bakker finished his series. It might not be the ending you like, it might not feel resolved enough for a lot of fans, but it's the ending he envisioned all along. And it hits like a speeding cement truck.

I think he's much more likely to publish a collection of short stories (the Atrocity Tales, all set in Eärwa at some point before the main series). The No-God books are a distant dream.

Finishing the Second Apocalypse took a lot out of our Aspect-Author. Imagine what kind of emotional and spiritual toll it would have taken to birth that monster into the world. From what I've heard, No-God isn't even on the backburner... it's just marinating in the fridge. But we Zaudunyani persist in our faith despite the hopeless odds.
