Remember that it's still very much part of it's genre
People were saying all the same shit about Malazan

A rumbling of a nerd dude with a bachelor in philosophy, writing as a fantasy format, very edgy and dark to the point of being stupid and unnecessary, seven books of just relentless darkness and edginess, and for what? Just to show how to cramp bunch of philosophical stuff wrapped up as fantasy, only midwits would think that Second Apocalypse is something of a grand work of fantasy literature. It's ok overall, Kellhus is truly the strongest point in the series, everything elses is just noise around him. If you want philosophy, then go read a real academic book on philosophy, or if you want some midwit intellecutal masturbation then read Bakker.

nah

But I’d rather read about meat-crazed Ordealmen getting nuked.

Fantasy is a cliché and entertaining genre. I read it for those things, and Bakker delivers with gusto. However, he does add in lots of interesting philosophical musing that sticks with you. If I want philosophy or high literature, I
will read Wittgenstein or Eliot. If I want amazing worldbuilding, heartbreaking battles, and clever inversion of every imaginable fantasy trope, I will read Bakker.... and meme about him to my accursed heart’s content.
