It's almost like the African slave trade was a international economic phenomena and everybody had a hand in it, except the Africans from the Congo and the other regions the West African slave traders got their slaves from. Doesn't make it any less despicable by our standards, but all someone is saying when they decry slavery is that human civilization no longer requires it, unfortunately for all the romanticists out there.
