I got filtered hard by Iron Dragon's Daughter when it got to the highechool part.
Should I slog through it? Does it get better at all?

Also got filtered very hard by Fortresses of the Pearl, the "second" Elric story. Someone said it's not necessarily canon, so can I just skip this shit? I loved the first book and powered through it in a single afternoon, but my problem is I HATE dreams and dream sequences in fantasy. It's NEVER done good, dreams in fantasy are so inane.

The whole thing takes place after the actual, literal Apocalypse, the end of the damn world, and the sides are trying to prevent a second apocalypse. That's literally the name if the books series, not even memeing. The second apocalypse series.

A paradox requires a heuristic collapse. At some point, the sense-making apparatus will fold into an internal consensus on how to handle the paradox.

Another way: Paradoxes aren't real. There is only that which is, which necessarily must remain cogent in some (even if not understood) context. They are pure constructs of linguistic consciousness (ie, whatever might be considered a 'soul'). So, to really 'understand' one, you need to be able to divorce yourself from pure reality into something like pragmatic self-space.

This. The pacing in the first two books is actually alright. They're long, but they have a lot going on. Oathbringer is the one where they took all the separate threads of the plot and mashed them into Marvel's Avengers where all the main characters became practically immortal superheroes that team up and fight evil. The majority of the criticism of Stormlight is really just criticism of Oathbringer (and probably ROW, haven't read it yet) Which is fine I guess, since I can't see the series being revived. But still, Way of Kings and Words of Radiance deserve some recognition for being good books even if the series went on to shit the bed later.

Currently reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson. The setting is a bit like The Name of the Rose but the characters seem out of sophist Harry Potter.
I have no idea what sort of reader he had in mind or how it made out of the editing process the way it did. The main character is a midwit that switches from autistic descriptions on architecture (60 pages to describe the convent and a fucking clock) to shit straight out of some YA novel. Why a first person narrator as soulless? It's a closed convent but he describes shit in his journal the potential readers (other monks) would already be familiar with, and it's just plain dettached exposition, no sense of awe or wonder.
Why the fuck does he need to pour muh worldbuilding down down your throat? A toast in the cafeteria is interrupted by literally 3 pages of the history of wine making. It's longer than the whole scene. The first 60 pages had like 20 lines of dialogue (the less insufferable parts).
220 pages in and I'm only making it through because I spoiled myself with what brings down conflict. I doubt anyone would keep reading for the world building alone.

I think it did, but it's either shut down or irreversably lost. The Inchoroi are orphans of the Ark. Sil was the first Inchoroi to shake off it's own aimlessness and that is why he got to be king of the Inchoroi.

Also, I think the Progenitors fused their souls or something like that to curb their population. The Inchoroi and Wracu get to have souls because the Progenitors didn't really mind if these bioweapons got killed in action and were sent to hell.

The Dunyan want to be in full control of their own souls. They've been trying to do this by taking control of their genetics and environment.

They hadn't considered the outside world or the Outside and how these things still had a hold over them that couldn't simply be walled off.

As each of them comes to understand this their strategies diverge though they still have the same goal of becomming self-moving souls as much as possible.

I think the Inchoroi and Wracu were given souls as an additional goad. Yes they already revel in debasement and destruction, but being intelligent there's the chance no matter how slight they can turn against the Progenitors...without the goad.

Implies logical coherence is necessary for the universe. We can only say for sure that it is necessary for our understanding of the universe, for us to construe useful models. "Everything is coherent with everything else" isn't something we directly observe but something we need to be true for us to even hope that understanding the universe is a possibility.

Maybe I missed something, but I got the sense from the Coffers of Sauglish scene that Wütteat was a souled creature from the Wracu-planet, naturally born, not created by the Inchoroi or Progenitors, the last of his race, who was held in stasis inside the Ark as it conquered many planets. All the Wracu of Eärwa are "derived" from Wütteat the same way that Sranc are "derived" from Nonmen. That's why Wütteat is considered the Father of Dragons.

Many souls become one soul. This soul is tucked away for safe keeping. The weapon races are given souls for them to be goaded, like you say, but the progenitors couldn't have many of these guys around without it preventing their goal of having the number of souls below their target.

Well we've reached the end of another Django Wexler series, and I will say that he at least had a better hold on how to tie up a climactic plot than he did with the Thousand Names series. When the book opened with a sex scene in the first chapter I was concerned that he really was going to make ever proceeding book he writes increasingly horny, but given that it was just about the only one in the entire story it appears to have simply been the requisite addition to a book written for teenagers. And it is most certainly a Young Adult Fiction, and it is necessary to lower your expectations appropriately. The main characters are all irrational and retarded teenagers, conflicts are often driven by pointless lack of communication, and there is an incredible amount of self-obsessed emotionality regardless of how pressing the plot may be at the time.

All that said, it was pretty fun. I appreciate that he decided to focus the entire book on the rebellion this time. After the dullfest that was the the Harbor plot in the second book, I think it's clear that Wexler ran entirely out of cool ideas for a mystery adventure series immediately after thinking up the Ghost Ship, and so he might as well return to his old standby of "rebellion against a corrupt autarchy." It's a plot he's worked with enough times that he's pretty good at developing it, and knows that it's best to mostly leave the day to day suffering as background that happens to mob characters.

I do feel a little bad for any character not named Isoka or Tori, given that they aren't really characters at all. A missed opportunity, honestly, as the small snatches of hidden background info we glean from throwaway comments by Jack or Zarun do make me wish they were given time to be more than handy tools for Isoka to throw at obstacles. This book was also shockingly bloodless for its main cast, given how willingly the first two books threw lives away for the sake of building tension and horror.

Overall, it's a 7/10 for me. Fine, and a fun bit of throwaway reading, but I think it's fairly clear at this point that Wexler's first book in any given series is its strongest, and I rather wish he would switch to just writing standalones.

Yes, do you know where you are? I like Bakker and dislike Sanderson, for the record.
