Reread the Divine Comedy last year, probably going to dive back into Homer this year. Narrative poetry is the highest form of written art.

Narrative poetry is a contradiction in and of itself. Homer wrote epics, not poems.

There are three greater categories in literature: the lyric, the epic and the dramatic. These three can be divided further into the metric and the prosaic ones. Metrical lyricism is poetry. Prosaic lyricism is free-form poetry (thus worthless, anyway). Metric epics are classical epics like Homer. Prosaic epics are novels, tales, basically everything that tells a story without adhering to a meter. Metric dramatics are classical stage plays. Prosaic dramatics are modern stage plays where the characters just speak their minds.

No. Poetry is. Epics are up there, but poetry is a step above. Epics come with the baggage of needing to fulfill a function - delivering information, telling a story. Poetry is free of that. Poetry can directly cut to the chase. The best epic imaginable just can't be as dense as a good poem, because epics need to share their page space with the story they are telling, and their literary value gets watered down by that.
