The King of Flames awakens to the Northern Queen

heavy hoarfrost has covered all
the northern wind whistles and blows
as pale Boreas blessed snows fall
with hail, as slushy water flows
past my window I see there grows
a blue rose alive among ice

“I crown me with the crooked limbs

I listened to the voice that singed
softer than the sweetest maiden
was it my own rev’ry that ringed

now wrapped in a blanket of blue
another flash, all is now snow
I heard her again “now go through
walk this path and I you will know”
but I could no longer now go
my body was fully broken
but the flame remained unbroken

my form was naught but snow and ice
but I held on to my inner heat
I tried getting up even thrice
towards she who’s voice was so sweet
I went out to marry and meet
suddenly my form had shattered
and all of me was now scattered

but my soul and my flame were one
though now as a servant of flame
I swore that this path shall be done
and her who’s voice cries I will claim
i darted as a flame that spun

I was now in a northern land
I felt such a euphoria
as I beheld a sight so grand

Aside from being really preachy, there's a part near the end where Richard saves himself from a dose of poison by using his magical gift to guess which herbs to use for an antidote. Felt really cheap. Technically, he could have done this within the first 200 pages. But wait, his gift is fueled by "need and anger". In other words, he has plot armor.

I’m a proud and vocal Bakkerfag but desu I don’t necessarily “respect” his writing as “literature” given its many, many flaws. Rather, I simply enjoy the madness, grandiosity, strangeness and obsessive, lurid, original, imaginative quality of it all. He can certainly write a stunning passage, but that doesn’f mean everything he writes is perfect, or that he’s some kind of Mishima, Bulgakov or Blake in terms of literary quality. Fantasy is kind of a hack genre at its core, just enjoy it for what it is desu.

My recommendation for this thread would be The Sword of Winter, by Marta Randall. I went in with expectations of sword and sorcery, but it was in fact a mystery novel in a fantasy setting. Good writing and characterisation, also enjoyed the setting.

does anyone have any recommendations for anything similar to Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained? I read a couple of other works by the author, Peter F. Hamilton, and once I recognized the flaws, I just can't read any more of his shit. He had this really clever, good world-building sci fi with some decent philosophical/moral underpinnings, but writes women and intimacy like a teenager writing fanfiction. It's terrible.

there are decent characters outside of killhouse, some good world-building, but WAAAY too much of the books is nonsense masquerading as substance.

bakker has largely tricked his most diehard readers into thinking there really is something meaningful in his books, but all it is is LotR but everyone dies at the end and so much gay rape, to the point where you have to wonder if Bakker had some horrible childhood experience he is trying to expiate in his writing.

it's funny to spam memes about it because it's not as well-known and it is pretty ridiculous when viewed from a distance, but it is rather stupid after a time.

i’m actually one who enjoys certain generic (as in, specific to genre) features, when done right with a fresh spin. i generally prefer creative spins on not-elves, not-orcs, not-middle kingdoms, not-barbaric northmen to worldbuilding that tries desperately hard to be completely novel and original. tropes are what make a genre, tropes done interestingly are what make a genre work unique.

I like Pillars of Eternity for my first full playthrough as a druid, will replay at a later date with the expansion. Tyranny sounds interesting but I haven't played it yet.
