The pepefication of 4chan is one of the biggest mysteries to me. It is amazing how a simple picture like this can have so much impact and turn into a bizarre movement, too. And there seem no end to it. Granted, pepe images have a certain appeal to it, but I can not put my finger on it why.

Same as Wojak. Pepe, or more accurately Apu, is a very simple character to manipulate, anyone with basic skills in a computer painting program can edit an Apu into any expression/situation. While not as simple as Wojak, almost as easy. Pepe is more difficult to manipulate so never caught on like the simplified helper frog Apu.
