some of it, in retrospect, is funny out of context, but in the context of the show it's intentional. And before you go "saying it's supposed to be bad just means it's bad", the entire show is dramatic and dreamlike. You think slow motion montages of people being lovingly murdered is supposed to be realistic or something? That's like watching the opera and then complaining that real people don't break into song after being stabbed.

Even if the writing isn’t particularly stellar, I found the premise of the show and some of the dilemmas it presents to be compelling:
>The interaction between ethics and aesthetics
> The presentation of unethical action in an elevated, aesthetic manner (reminiscent of Lolita perhaps)
> At what point does aesthetics overtake ethics?
> How the exercise of “actualization” may often be an amoral process (I.e. Hannibal acting as handmaiden to Will’s authentic violent fundamentals)

I’d say The Wire and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Both are long format and handle the topics they choose with depth and broad casts of characters, most of which have some adequate depth. LoGH was even based off a move series. The Wire was written by journalists. Both of them take their respective medium and inject them with literary prowess that elevated them to the peaks of their medium. I’m not sure many other TV programs have done as good a job at maintaining quality all the way through. I can think of a few shows that almost hit that greatness but fumbled it by the end. Though, I know there will be plenty of anons who disagree with be because it’s anime and black people.

I feel retarded for not realising that John Locke and Boone Carlyle were paired together as contrasting literary allusions, I thought Boone was just a spoiled rich kid but I guess the idea was in Thomas Caryle fashion he had a sense of heroic duty (saving his sister and ultimately everyone else on the island, humbly looking up to John Locke as a mentor), despite being born into a position where he had no expectations because of his pampered background. Meanwhile, John Locke himself was the opposite, being seen as special his whole life, and rejecting anyone telling him what he can and can't do (and ultimately dying for nothing as a result).

I'm just watching the third one and it's my favourite. It's the most experimental. It's very patient as well. Lynch sometimes just does an entire episode that feels just like an art show. It's like you're on drugs, but not (necessarily) on drugs. Really dreamy. Please see it if you liked the Twin Peaks before. It's made 25 years after them so it's meant to be watched after some break, doesn't have to be immediately.
