Start with Miles Davis (Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue), John Coltrane (A Love Supreme) and Charles Mingus (The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady) obviously.

Afterwards, check out Thelonious Monk (esp. Solo Monk), Sun Ra (esp. Jazz in Silhouette), Duke Elington and Eric Dolphy, shouldn't be hard to go further at that point.

Also, if you're interested in modern variants of the genre, check John Zorn, Bohren & der Club of Gore, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Supersilent and Arve Henriksen. Cowboy Bebop soundtracks (made by The Seatbelts) may also spark some interest.

Last but not least, Buena Vista Social Club makes essential Latin Jazz and you should listen to Brigitte Fontaine (Comme à la radio) if you have a weak spot for French female vocalists.

The old, "We're discussing it, so it must be art," cliche is old. I'm not sure anyone's even saying he's not art. That's not at issue.

It can be art all day long. That doesn't make it music. That doesn't make it enjoyable to listen to, or even palatable. I like to listen to my music. I like to sing along (probably poorly). I want to enjoy it, not be enlightened by it.

This is _exactly_ what I meant about the cult of intelligence mandating that the only things that are worthy are the things that are so concerned with breaking conventions, they're not even aesthetically pleasing anymore.

>That doesn't make it music. That doesn't make it enjoyable to listen to, or even palatable. I like to listen to my music. I like to sing along (probably poorly).
you could sing along with anything, as long as you do it "poorly".
>I want to enjoy it,
That is the very point. First comes the existence, then the essence; all you need to appreciate anything at all as music is the will to do so.
>not be enlightened by it.
nobody wants to get enlightened. nobody wants to think. we're getting locking into western conventions and all dissent gets elimitated.
we are not reasonable, we are not beautiful, we are not enlightened. we come and we say "arab singing is ugly", "japanese music is boring", "chookchee song is but a form of torture" and we are the cool, we are the powerful and fashionable folks. we are the borg. we are the totalitarians.
and this is exactly why we need artists like stockhausen to remind of the universals, of the things that the philosophers and artists have been talking about for centuries.
>This is _exactly_ what I meant about the cult of intelligence mandating that the only things that are worthy are the things that are so concerned with breaking conventions, they're not even aesthetically pleasing anymore.
a naked depiction of a pagan goddess was not pleasing to anyone in the dark middle ages. it was disgusting! similarily the old masters, the old conventions, the old world was considered repulsive to anyone who lived through the world wars, through hitlerism, through stalinism, through the 20th century.
stockhausen is for whatever reasons a delight to me as much as he was a delight to the young men and women whose parents went to watch Mozart's Zauberflöte right after deliving a speech against the filthy anglojewish slavniggers.
This is also how rock became the music of the southern middle class whites in the 50s. The taste cannot be choosen consciously, but life forms your unconscious attitudes which do form your taste.
