Does anybody know how much of a book's content a person is allowed to quote online, and whether you have to quote the original source in each case?

So the thing is, there’s a copyright in anything that you make. Once it manifests into reality, it has a copyright. So, theoretically, if you take something and use it as your own, that person can sue you for an injunction to make you stop. The reason you file with the copyright office is so when someone infringes on your work, you can get statutory damages for it, like the guy that torrents 3000 books, each book is a violation, so you could sue them for maximum damages for each instance. This is why you give citation to a work. Generally a citation mixed with fair use would give you enough protection if you were brought to court, seeing as they are affirmative defenses. Generally, suing a small guy, who is probably judgement proof, is a waste of resources, unless the company or person is trying to prove a point and strike fear into the public.

No hard rule, but you probably couldn’t get away more than 2 pages or 5% of a shorter piece

Just put the source. It is annoying to find a decent quote without a source.
