I think you answered your own question. Being the exact right kind of basic with a sufficient amount of self-confidence and geniality is more than enough to make you popular among your peers.
Basically being the clear reflection of a demographic in tastes, temperament and mindset is almost a guaranteed path to popularity with that demographic, provided you're able to put yourself out there and be even vaguely entertaining to listen to. It's even better when it's effortless, that is, when you actually lack any kind of distance or critical perspective on your own subculture.
