How does /lit/ feel about audiobooks?

I'm really overwhelmed with a lot of things right now, but I'm reading Crime and Punishment. More precisely, I'm listening to it while reading it. It's faster, I remember more, and it's harder for my mind to wander away. Because of everything (not really important what) I'd find it more difficult to take some time to read a little bit of it and my mind would keep wandering, but like this those are almost unnoticeable problems.
(This is the first, and probably the last, time I'm doing this).

I want to write smut. I’ve been role playing online for years now so i think I could get pretty popular.

>> No.17481366

The only problem with them is that people tend to read them while doing something which leads to them not giving the book their full attention

I use them as background noise for when I do other stuff
Basically only genre fiction, so books I wouldn't actually want to read instead of what else I could spend my reading time on

My brother bought me a subscription to Audible. I like his intention or whatever, but I prefer actually reading books.

Are there any books that are better "read" as audiobooks

>Are there any books that are better "read" as audiobooks
Of course not
But you can listen to audio books while driving etc, so you can entertain yourself with genre shit while you do the dishes

>> No.17483901

>>17483878
Some people just can't get into audio books and that's fine. If you want to try it, try a light fiction book and then a thick nonfiction book. Some people absorb info better auditory, but some just can't do it, and some really like visualizing what they're told. Narrator can really matter too.

My recommendation for fiction is Master and Commander. If Patrick Tull's narration doesn't do it for you, audio fiction just isn't for you.

Thanks guys. I already used one credit for a local artist's collection of short stories. It worked pretty well, desu. I'll look up a nonfiction thing next, to see if I get more out of it than literally just reading it.

Basically what I mean by "entertain yourself with genre shit" is that your lifetime is finite and you can't read every book, so things that fall just short of making the cut are good for audio books

I only ever use them to get myself into the mood for reading, I can't actually listen to an audiobook while I'm fully invested into reading though. I need to turn the narration speed to like 3x to match my reading pace and listening to narrators on that speed isn't fun at all. In terms of just listening to the audiobook in place of physically reading the book, I can't focus on the audio alone, and I feel like if I multitask I won't be able to get anything out of listening to the audiobook.

To be fair, I would like to actually read one of the books to see if and how he describes the MC. If he avoids describing the MC at all, then the point is that it's supposed to be a self insert for anyone, so I'd give him a bit of slack there. He does need cover art and the shaggy, brown hair covering eyes thing is passe.

They’re pretty good. I listen to them while hiking and skating. The only thing that I don’t like about them is when I miss something and have to rewind; pulling my phone out is a hassle. Oh, one thing too is that now I associate certain places and scents with scenes from books, and whether or not this sucks depends on what book it is.
Anyway, speaking of which, does anyone have a good source for audiobooks? I’ve used Librivox in the past but it only has books in the public domain.
