Hey, I want to work on polishing an idea for a magic system that I have been working on, does anyone have any links and online resources that could help me, please? The best one that I have is Sanderson’s Laws of Magic, and 4chan seems very divided on him for some reason.

I actually spent a lot of time thinking about magic systems, so I thought I'd give my input.

Basically you can create your own meta-physics and mystical forces that shapes your wielders powers, but the powers themselves always turn out relatively the same (example : elemental forces, control of time/space, telekinesis, clairvoyance, etc).

The trick I think would be to make spell casting more like spell weaving, a dynamic and fluid dance, so that one spell leads naturally into the other.
Also, there could be a system of counters and balance. For instance, an enemy fires magic missiles and you put up an aura shield to deflect them, but then the enemy, in response, fires an energy orb which would shatter your shield so that you are then forced to blast it out of the air with a beam of light.

As far as inspirational magic systems I like Mistborn and the game "Lichdom : Battlemage" (I think that's what its called)

Most magic systems are just circuitry, especially Sanderson's. because rather than being supernatural they conceive of a material resource that can be drawn upon and manipulated much like you would stone, wood, water. So, in these cased, magic ends up being logic gates, flow of some energy along a path, switches. Circuits. It is pretty limiting, but if you want your Magic to be immanent, worldly, material, rather than something beyond or outside it then that is the extant of it so you might as well just learn Boolean algebra. It has little to do with Meta-Physics but, rather, adding to pre-existing physics.

If you want your magic to be immaterial, you can still have a "system", but really all you need to do is pick rules you think are cool and not contradict them without plausible explanation. And you would be better served by drawing on religion, philosophy, maybe reading up on Theurgy and esoteric practices from around the world which all have explanations for how what they claim to do "works", although you wouldn't call them a "Magic System" in the same manner you would for someone sucking up Stormlight so they can fly or whatever.
