it's been a while since I read this (exactly that edition) and I don't remember it at all being as dry and annalistic as you describe. I remember it being very good. Anyway if you really disliked it you should have put it down after 2/3rd, since that edition is like 2300 pages. You read 1500-1600 pages of a book you didn't like? bizarre.
