"But anon", I hear you reaching for, "common mental illnesses have been resolved with basic therapy!", and therein lies in the problem. The conflation with the 'progress' brought about by bogus pop-science psychology, and the devolution of puritanism and stiff-upper-lippedness that sought to suppress the expression of common emotion. Depression can exist, but in most cases where it is not a crippling and inhibiting factor to someone's physical function, it can easily be resolved.

Issues such as 'modern depression' (that is, non-inhibiting, low worth, self esteem, feelings related) can be resolved very simply: kindness. If someone is feeling bad, then YOU can make a difference to them. A hug, a smile, a talk, a sense of value... that's not an 'illness' being resolved. And my resentment of this perversion is that, by calling it an illness, and over subscribing to 'mental health issues', we make people feel inadequate to HELP people in front of us. And if we cannot help each other, when we see one another in crisis, because we have become convinced it is an illness only treatable by medical professionals, then truly we have been demoralised by this perversion.
