Imagine having Augustine and Aquinas for your religion.
Oh.
We do.
It’s Ruth and Gehrig.
Why is Augustine best?
Only because St. Thomas didn’t have crucial worldly experience.
I’m here to listen to your best shots.

Aquinas was actually Normand, a descendant of the Normands who settled in Sicily.

His father's name is Landulf per Wiki. That's Lombard origin, not Norman. But since they were wealthy, could have intermarried at some point. But being a celibate Catholic priest, it doesn't matter who his ancestors were since he won't have descendents.

Since Aquinas is getting brought up I want to mention I find his theory on werewolves interesting. He says demons can transmute flesh consistent with the Bible describing the staffs turning into snakes in Egypt. However, he says the soul can only be transmuted by God. Therefore, a werewolf would have full human agency and mind. Does /lit/ agree with this?

I’m looking this up.
These two are great.
When Augustine talks of the theater, it was live sex scenes and snuff films.
/lit/ is the best.
I never read these two, they’re so wise, and I had Catholic schooling all the way.

Oh, I don't know, sorry. I got most of my information on him from priests and monks. He's famous for defending hesychasm and the mystical tradition of Orthodox Christianity. He asserted that it is possible to know god's energies directly - though not his essence - through mystical prayer. Very important for concepts like Theosis as well. This contrasts with the more rationalist approach of the Western church.

Where do I begin with orthodox theology then?

>> No.17460347

>>17460286
Depends on what you mean by that. The recordings of the Ecumenical Councils are all the doctrine you will ever need for the Eastern Orthodox Church. Palamism and the mystical tradition have a far stronger focus on practice than theory, but if you want to commit to seeking knowledge through revelation, you can begin with the Jesus Prayer. The Bible and some books on the life of the saints will also do you good. Honestly though, find a priest and ask. If you are serious about Orthodoxy, you need a Spiritual Father.

What Catholic hasn't sinned other than Christ? To call Augustine a charlatan is to acknowledge the wickedness of man. Of course, he was a charlatan, he was a man and confesses to it in Confessions. His unyielding faith and humility to turn toward God and seek forgiveness for his sinful ways make him a great Catholic. I'm sure Aquinas sinned and confessed to his Lord for his sins.
